TORONTO — When it comes to female friendships, Anna Kendrick says the mutual respect and energy of a close friend group can be a source of great strength.

“You realize how much those relationships matter,” said Francis, who is from Montreal and based in Los Angeles. “We were like ‘I feel so seen.’” She realized that it was a big loss not just for her, but for anyone else who had to stop interacting with someone they saw regularly. “You see how they challenge each other,” she said. “Alice, Darling” is a Canadian-produced thriller in which Kendrick portrays the title character struggling to reconnect with herself while being pushed to the breaking point by her psychologically abusive boyfriend. "It's not about gender but it feels like a superpower.

Also, a subplot about a search for a missing woman in the area around the cottage feels both narratively too on the nose, and a bit of padding that never quite pans out. Alice, Darling is a first feature from Mary (daughter of Bill) Nighy, and it’s confidently shot in a way that puts us close to its main character, and almost immediately fearful for her. And once her façade of normalcy tumbles, it’s a quick collapse, from telling her friends that “he wouldn’t love me if he knew how bad I am” to confiding: “I don’t want to go home.”

Anna Kendrick on the Toll of a Psychologically Abusive Relationship ... (Elle Canada)

Anna Kendrick plays a woman in a toxic relationship that comes to important revelations while on a weekend getaway in new film Alice, Darling.

“This sounds like very self indulgent, artistic nonsense, but it was terrifying to not have that kind of parachutes to rely on and trust that I could be still and that the truth of the moment will come across. You’re in a situation where you have to self-trust, and that it’s not as simple as just saying, ‘Yeah, I need to have self-trust.’ So it’s an incredibly small and intimate film, but we really wanted to try as much as we could to not make it black and white.” I did start to worry about that and I really just found that everybody on set was just so lovely, and made me laugh so much. The first day that I met Wunmi [Musaki], who plays one of the friends, she and I were talking about this exact balancing act,” she said. The role is a departure for Kendrick, who has often played peppy characters in films such as Pitch Perfect, Trolls and Twilight. So I guess my relationship is fine.’ I just never wanted there to be a moment where something so clear happens that you would invalidate your own experience if you were watching it,” Kendrick explained. So it was almost like, knowing that there was this life raft of these beautiful group of artists that had all responded to the material for the same reasons everybody that was involved, came to it. And that can be scary because sometimes there’s a temptation after weeks of shooting many scenes that feel confusing and restrained that you want to spoon-feed the audience something,” she said in an interview. It certainly makes victims of psychological abuse feel validated, showing that not all abuse looks alike and is violent. So it was just an amazing supportive group of people to have around me.” “I felt like there were points when Mary Nighy, our director, was being very supportive and very sweet. She recently shared that she too was involved in an emotionally abusive relationship with her ex-partner for six years.

Technically this has a very good screenplay that goes shaping and offering the keys to the story very step by step in the drama. The daughter of actors Bill Nighy and Diana Quick, Mary Nighy is an actor, writer, producer and director. If you’re looking for a powerhouse in the acting industry, actress Anna Kendrick is it. The true story is inside and it is revealed little by little, like Alice´s locks of hair. This is a story about psychological abuse that is well narrated and is also a “social denouncement” and you need to be prepared for this. that is also manipulative (as the plot reveals to us).

When Tess came to check on her the next day, Alice finally said something that she truly wanted: she said that she didn’t want to go back. Tess told her that it was a big red flag that she couldn’t tell her supposed life partner that she was going out with her friends, but still, Alice felt that it was her fault. But Alice found the will to live, to look at the brighter side of things, to do things her way, all because her friends took a stand for her when it mattered the most. Alice was unaware about the fact that how much she needed that trip and how much it could help her cause. Alice had requested that Simon add her friends to the guest list, and then she came and told Sophie and Tess how he wanted them to be there. But here, Alice felt like it was her duty to go back to him, and she even told Tess and Sophie about her plans. Sophie and Tess found it a bit strange that their friend was talking about the ramifications of having an “immoral dream,” and there was an awkward silence where they wanted to say a lot but just kept quiet. She wanted them to be there, and for some reason, she knew that Simon would never want her friends to be around her. How trapped Alice felt in the relationship was established through the little details, like the fact that she took her phone with her when she went to the washroom or how nervous she felt when she knew that Simon would not approve of her actions. Between the conversations, Alice abruptly got up and went to the washroom, to click a seductive picture of herself and send it to her boyfriend, Simon. Alice had lied when she said that Simon wanted to invite both of her friends to his gallery opening. Directed by Mary Nighty, “Alice, Darling” is a simple, straightforward, and impactful story of a girl who was put in shackles by the man she believed to be her soul mate.
