'True Spirit' Real Life Character: Jessica Watson, Explained: How ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

"True Spirit" is based on the real life of an Australian teenager named Jessica Watson, who traveled the seas of the world on her boat, unassisted.

It was the first time that she had to do it all by herself, and she had to expand her mental faculties to not just keep going on her mission but to put in the labor to sustain herself. When she has to face the biggest storm of her journey, she is advised to give up and go to the nearest port available. It was a risk but a calculated one where she was acting from a place of cautious optimism and not blind faith. When Jessica’s mother tells her that the winds will blow for her again, just like they do for every sailor, she also means that Jessica will learn to take care of herself, just like every other person does. But a teenager who sets out to conquer the world also carries an element of recklessness, which we saw when Jessica forgot to strap herself in during her first storm or when she was unaware that she was going backward because she had forgotten to turn on her alarms. When Roger decided not to stand in the way of his daughter, he was taking a leap of faith, which meant that he still had doubts, and Jessica was disheartened when she learned about them. But she had her sister to show her the other side of the coin, one where Jessica is a strong person and has people who love and support her despite any misgivings they have. It wasn’t just the optimism of youth that made her believe that she would be fine, but the fact that she had always been taken care of. Now, we admit that what she did required a great deal of industry, dedication, and courage, and we applaud her for it, but even though she was successful, we still believe that a 16-year-old should not have put herself in such danger. The next part of her journey was not shown, but as she kept ticking things off the list, her parents must have become aware of her determination. When Ben Bryant tells her that she does not need to prove anything to him, we don’t think he was saying that because he believed in her. It is exhilarating, isn’t it, when you find that what you have been working for is just a tiny part of everything you have achieved?

While not a solo sailing story, this one is still very good and is a bit similar to True Spirit. In White Squall, a group of students sign up to learn sailing and travel the world. The Dove is about 16-year-old Robin Lee Graham, an American boy with dreams of sailing around the world alone. It displays Robin’s valor, bravery, and unflinching spirit as he embarks on a heroic quest to realize his ambition of sailing across the globe by himself. Not to be confused with the 2022 psychological thriller with the same name, 2006’s Deep Water is another adaptation (rather, a documentary) of Donald Crowhurst’s story: A novice sailor attempts to sail solo around the world in a yacht. Many people have been in similar situations as he was, but they usually haven’t involved a pledge to sail solo around the world and are thus not quite as interesting as this man’s life was. The Mercy is about Donald Crowhurst, a novice sailor who tries to sail around the world in a yacht by himself. True Spirit is a new movie about Jessica Watson, one of the youngest people ever to sail around the world solo. This one has a bit more drama than some of the other movies on this list, but the drama, like many good stories, stems from a lot of truth. It is a must-watch for anyone interested in sailing, adventure, and the human spirit. He was a rowdy teenager that struggled with drugs and following the law, but he had big dreams of exploring. This film is a very fast-paced look at the many difficulties that solo sailors face.

True Spirit Review - an inspirational true story brought to life (Ready Steady Cut)

The film opens as Jess (Teagan Croft) reflects on her relationship with the ocean and her love for sailing. Then, we see Jess on her boat, Pink, where she looks ...

Croft’s performance as Jess is all the more impressive because of the large number of scenes that she is in by herself, on the boat. Despite the odds, Jess finishes her preparations and bids a tearful goodbye to her family and Ben and sets off. As Jess prepares, the audience is shown flashbacks to her as a young girl deciding that she wants to do the voyage and learning to sail. But despite the worries of Roger (Josh Lawson) and Julie (Anna Paquin), they support her desire to be the youngest person to complete the journey. True Spirit is the latest offering of this type, and it’s certainly a strong entry in the genre.

Verdict: As the title suggests True Spirit is an incredible story of a young girl’s spirit, determination, and incredible courage to overcome insurmountable odds to beat a world record. The music and structure of the narrative bring a sense of joy that some biopics of a similar mould have been unable to capture in the past. Josh Lawson’s portrayal of Jessica's father, captures the angst of a conflicted father who is reluctant to send his daughter on a dangerous journey, but who is also unwilling to stand in the way of her life-long ambition.

The makers of this film tried to balance out a couple of intense moments at sea with a lot of other positive things (displaying her courage and her wholesome relationship with her family, etc.). Overall, this is an inspiring watch and will leave you feeling a little bit amazed, even if the drama itself doesn’t really stand out. All that said, True Spirit is definitely inspiring, and discovering this real-life story throughout the movie reminds us why this is still a great medium.
