Nets win without Kyrie Irving thanks to Cam Thomas' 44-point night (New York Post)

Cam Thomas put together a star turn, carrying the Kyrie Irving-less Nets to a 125-123 victory over the Wizards at Barclays Center on Saturday night.

The referee review showed goaltending as well, by Gafford, and the Nets had a great escape. But the Nets used a 13-0 run — capped by consecutive Patty Mills 3-pointers — to cut the deficit to seven. Thomas pulled the Nets within 99-97, and after collaring an intercepted pass, he beat Corey Kispert upcourt for a game-tying dunk that knotted it at 109-all. So we just have to come out and keep the main thing the main thing, and shut out all the outside noise and go out and play as hard as we can and let the chips fall where they may. “I mean, at the end of the day, it’s basketball. Warren, and lost Seth Curry and Markieff Morris during the game. The Nets also played without Ben Simmons and T.J. Irving — who hadn’t been listed on the initial injury report — After a review, it was determined that Daniel Gafford had committed goaltending on the shot. The Nets are 5-7 since Kevin Durant sprained his right MCL on Jan. “We [were] down by a lot, 18,” Thomas said. That helped the Nets,

The Brooklyn Nets came back from a 23-point deficit to beat the Washington Wizards on Saturday thanks to Cam Thomas' career-high 44 points.

Morris did not get much time in the first half, but during that span, he wasn’t able to make anything happen on either end of the floor. He wasn’t able to get anything going on the offensive end and he didn’t establish a presence on the glass. He was awesome on the boards and he had more than a few nice passes to set up his teammates for easy buckets. While he did not shoot well from the field, he did make timely shots during the Nets’ comeback from a 23-point deficit. He was great on the defensive end as it was his own block party for once. Curry did a good job of scoring the basketball during his time on the floor.

It’s just one win in a long season, and a storyline that, considering the Irving situation, will get quickly swept over. While injuries to Seth Curry (adductor) and Markieff Morris (knee) trimmed their 10-man rotation to just eight, Washington got the worst of it, with Kyle Kuzma exiting due to injury in the second quarter. That’s a testament to Cam Thomas, firstly, with credits to a host of other Nets like Edmond Sumner, Nic Claxton, and Royce O’Neale. The Nets were down 19 as the first quarter buzzer sounded, looked lifeless, and to make matters worse, there wasn’t a Wizard capable of missing, it seemed. Remember how they gave up 46 points in the first quarter in Boston on Wednesday, the start of one of their worst losses in franchise history? Instead, you’ll end up with Cam Thomas taking on Monte Morris in the final seconds of a game as thrilling as one could hope for.

The Brooklyn Nets came back from a 23-point deficit to beat the Washington Wizards on Saturday. Here's how NBA Twitter reacted to the win.

Edmond Sumner scores 29 points starting in place of Irving. Cam Thomas scores career-high 44 points off the bench. That massive comeback was because of Cam Thomas and Edmond Sumner reaching career-highs in scoring and Nic Claxton being the stabilizing force for Brooklyn like he has been all season. The Nets allowed Kristaps Porzingis to score 20 points on just nine shots in the first 24 minutes. Nic Claxton had 15 points and three blocks and Patty Mills had 13 points. Brooklyn has swept the regular-season series between the two teams at 4-0.

Cam Thomas shows Nets he deserves minutes with 44-point game (ClutchPoints)

Cam Thomas turned a lot of heads on Saturday against the Washington Wizards, and the Brooklyn Nets might want to take a serious look as well.

After that display as a certified bucket-getter, it might be best for the Nets to give Thomas a bigger role. Against the Wizards, however, Thomas proved to the Nets why he deserves more minutes and maybe a starting nod. The young swingman has been largely used as a backup by the Nets, and while he’s getting extra minutes recently (due to Kevin Durant’s absence), it actually didn’t start that way.

Cam Thomas of the Brooklyn Nets played his socks off in a historic comeback win against the Washington Wizards.

KD needs all the help that he can get, and if it comes in the form of young guns and excited Japanese, so be it. Kevin Durant is still with the Nets, and players like Yuta Watanabe, Joe Harris, and now Cam Thomas show why they can be trusted. The ceiling for him is not set in stone—he’s only a sophomore. The barrage was a sight to behold, with the Wizards’ defense helpless. Their presence is the icing on the cake, not the cake itself. With his 44-point performance against the stuttering Wizards, Thomas joins an elite group of players who have scored at an incredible efficiency and pace.

Putting aside a horrendous shooting night on the first half of Washington’s back-to-back, Avdija has logged career highs in points twice since Rui Hachimura was traded to the Lakers on Jan. Thomas’ five assists on Saturday were a supplement to his case for a starting role after he developed a reputation for being a one-dimensional, ball-dominant guard who wore the leather out looking for his own shot. Thomas hasn’t earned his ticket off the bench yet, but a few repeat performances of what he did on Sunday may leave the Nets without a choice. [infamous eyeroll](https://deadspin.com/steve-nash-was-a-lame-duck-head-coach-from-the-start-in-1849165518) at the mere mention of Nash’s comments pertaining to him looking for teammates during a summer league postgame interview was the canary in the coal mine. Thomas has felt underutilized on the Nets in the past, going so far as to change his Instagram bio to #FreeCT after Steve Nash was canned in early November. [Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes](https://twitter.com/ChrisBHaynes/status/1622250871571779585) reported Sunday morning that that the Nets will sideline Irving indefinitely as they scrape the bottom of the barrel for suitors who can provide pennies on the dollar for Irving by the Feb.

WATCH: Cam Thomas Scores Career-High 44 Points (And the Valley Shook)

Former Tiger Cam Thomas scored a career-best 44 points last night and his Brooklyn Nets needed every last point to hold off the Washington Wizards 125-123.

Brooklyn will sit Irving until a trade materializes which could open the door for Thomas to stake his claim as a big part of the Nets’ future. Thomas has a chance to really establish himself in Brooklyn now that Kyrie Irving has requested a trade and is reportedly willing to sit out the rest of the season if those demands are not met. At 21-years-old, he became the third youngest player in NBA history to score 40+ points off the bench.
