The Staffroom: The road to employment for students with SEND (FE Week)

Students with SEND are massively under-represented in the workforce but high aspirations and simple actions can begin to change that, says Gail Stonier.

The outcome is young people who have the life skills to help them overcome obstacles and achieve, all done at a pace that is right for each individual and their capabilities. This work is ongoing as we seek to offer an even broader range of opportunities for our students. We know our students have a lot to offer, they can be confident and employable individuals and they can pursue their dreams and succeed as young adults. We want them to have as many opportunities available to them as their peers in a mainstream school or college. Confidence in practical matters and technical skills to succeed in a digital world are vital too, as are the basics of good timekeeping, being personable and looking presentable. All these attributes to being employment ready can be hard for young people with SEND.

The Minister of Economy and Labour Jason Hayward has shared with Parliament the new Independent Contractor Guidance 2023, which is published under the Manager of the Labour Relations Section of the Employment Act 2000. Separate from its analysis of the BLS data, NIC also reported that despite positive momentum in occupancy throughout 2022, skilled nursing occupancy decreased slightly in November due to a labor shortage in the industry, declining 12 basis points from October to end the month at 79.4%. The uptick in wages comes amid a decline in occupancy levels for nursing home facilities.
