Irving's tenure with the Nets was marred by his refusal to be vaccinated for the coronavirus and his posting of a link to an antisemitic film.
The Nets are fourth in the Eastern Conference. This season, the Nets suspended Irving on Nov. In 2021, they lost an Eastern Conference semifinal series to the eventual champion Milwaukee Bucks in seven games. The Nets had opted not to offer him a fully guaranteed maximum contract before the season and The Athletic reported that the Nets had offered him a contract with “guarantee stipulations” that was “not well received.” LOS ANGELES (AFP) The Brooklyn Nets have reached a deal to trade Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks days after the controversial star guard requested a trade, US media reported Sunday, Feb.

In theory, Durant, Simmons and the roster of role players they've assembled should be more than enough to be competitive, but what we have seen from Simmons this season makes it hard to view him as anything but an albatross contract. The Nets just traded their second-best player, who happens to be close friends with their best player, for a package of largely win-now assets. The Rockets share a division with the Mavericks. The two complement each other well on the court, with Irving's ability to shoot from the perimeter as well as being one of the greatest shot-creators the game has seen. [NBA](/nba/). He's likely going to receive the financial assurance he failed to get from Brooklyn. Here's a look at the specifics of the trade, along with some winners and losers.
Point guard Chris Paul was included in a Phoenix Suns offer to acquire former Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving, per a report.
Paul has two years left on his deal, but only $15.8 million of the $30.8 million for next season are guaranteed. Charania said the Suns made an initial offer within “18 hours” of Irving’s trade request but never built upon that package, eventually losing interest. Irving had ties to the Suns as a former teammate of general manager James Jones with the Cleveland Cavaliers and through a relationship with Chris Paul built in the NBAPA. The Nets agreed to acquire guard Spencer Dinwiddie, forward Dorian Finney-Smith, a first-round pick and two second-round picks for Irving, who requested a trade out of Brooklyn and is on an expiring contract. Los Angeles included two first-round picks in the offer package, adding Brooklyn was seeking picks and capable players, and that separated the Mavericks’ deal getting done days ahead of the Thursday trade deadline. With Kyrie Irving now traded to the Dallas Mavericks, his Brooklyn Nets tenure is being eulogized across the NBA world — and former Boston Celtics ...
Fast forward to a year after Irving’s departure from Boston, and you’ll see another team that made it to at least the conference finals. While it’s taken Cleveland a while to get back to relevancy, it was James’ departure that collapsed the Cavs. When Kyrie forced the Cleveland Cavaliers front office’s hand with his trade demand, the team was still able to make the following season’s Finals being led by LeBron James and a host of role players.
All of that changed in recent days ahead of the 2023 NBA trade deadline, as Irving demanded a trade from the Nets due to disagreements about a potential ...
How would the Nets fare without him on the court? While there will be some real complications, the Nets do have an incentive to trade Irving before the deadline to avoid losing him for nothing in the summer and having the issue hanging over the team until then. Irving is set to be a free agent in the summer, has been notoriously unreliable over the past few years and will only want to play for a select number of clubs.

Irving signed as a free agent while Durant joined the Nets on a sign-and-trade with Golden State. Irving is, for now, scheduled to become a free agent after the season. He wasn't with the Nets for their game Saturday, and by Sunday afternoon, his time in Brooklyn appeared to be at an end. He wouldn’t get vaccinated against COVID-19 and, because of New York City workplace rules, had to miss most of Brooklyn’s home games last season. “I think first, we’ve got to discuss just how long he’s been playing professional basketball. It will become complete once the teams have a call with the NBA, which is standard for all trades. Irving is averaging 27.1 points, 5.3 assists and 5.1 rebounds this season. The Mavericks play at Utah on Monday night. And I think for Dallas, they got a big-time star to go with the one they’ve got.” I think that’s important to do.
Dallas gave the Nets several assets to land Irving, who could potentially just be a rental.
We'll have to wait and see how this works out for the Mavericks, but if they don't end up with a significantly better roster at the start of next season after all of this, then this Irving deal will look even worse -- and could spell disaster for Doncic's tenure with Dallas. But if they can't come to a new contract with Irving, then they just gave up two key role players and several draft picks for a two-month rental. Dallas plans on watching the season play out before discussing a new contract with Irving, a smart decision to see how the Irving-Luka Doncic pairing works.

And so, for the past three and a half years, the Nets firmly set their sights on a championship that, they believed, the arrivals of Irving and Durant had put within reach. They gave up a king’s ransom to do it: The package included three first-round picks, four pick swaps and Jarrett Allen, a talented young center who has found success, including an All-Star selection, in Cleveland. In return, the Nets will receive two players, a distant first-round draft pick and multiple second-round picks. “I’m consistently in the lineup, that helps,” Irving said. Having superstar talent is the only surefire way to win a championship in the N.B.A. After meeting Irving’s trade request, the Nets are once again in a state of uncertainty.

Are the Nets no longer a threat to the Celtics in the East after Kyrie Irving's departure, or does Boston still need to bolster its roster to feel better ...
The Celtics have to be aggressive examining potential moves. What happens when Doncic doesn’t have the ball in his hands as much throughout games? The Mavericks will have no problem scoring the basketball but there will be only one basketball. Maybe the Mavericks had no other choice. The Celtics have a $5.9 million traded player exception that could help deliver talent without necessarily having to fully match salaries. The hard part will be finding a deal that acquires an impact player given the team’s somewhat limited resources to work with. But there’s a championship-sized opportunity here and adding another player with potential to play in a postseason rotation could go a long way towards helping Boston achieve its loftiest goals. But even while playing alongside a star talent like Luka Doncic, the Mavericks struggled to stay above the play-in line in the weaker West. The 76ers sit 2.5 games back and visit TD Garden on Wednesday night. A healthy Durant is still one of the NBA’s elite but Ben Simmons hasn’t consistently tapped into his full abilities. Spencer Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney-Smith are solid players who shouldn't rock the boat. Here’s the thing: No matter how many headaches Irving caused with his various antics, you always worried about the Nets’ overall potential if he ever behaved.

The Mavericks have even more defensive issues after trading for Irving.
The trade to land Irving certainly gives Dallas that secondary shot creator it so desperately needed, but in doing so it got even worse on defense. But similar to the other guys on this list, Kuzma will be in high demand if he's made available. His minutes could be staggered with Doncic and Irving so that there's at least one plus-defender in the backcourt, and his defensive intensity on the floor makes his teammates want to play up to his level. They could offer both of their 2025 and 2027 first-round picks, and young guys like [Josh Green](/nba/players/3148154/josh-green/) or [Jaden Hardy](/nba/players/26819214/jaden-hardy/), but there's other teams in the league that could offer something better, so it would take a lot for the Mavericks to land him. The Mavs have the 2025 and 2027 first-round picks to dangle, and could attach the likes of Hardy or Green to sweeten the pot for the Bulls. If Chicago does trade Caruso, Dallas could certainly be in the mix to land him. Caruso has been mentioned in trade rumors leading up to Thursday's deadline, but it's unclear what the Bulls want in return for him, or if they even want to shop him. [NBA](/nba/) trade deadline, so the Mavericks still have time to address the glaring need for defensive-minded players. This is wishful thinking for the Mavericks primarily because every contending team in the league would love to have Anunoby on their roster. [Raptors](https://www.cbssports.com/nba/teams/TOR/toronto-raptors/) already turned down a reported deal for Anunoby that would've landed them three first-round picks. While Irving's offensive talents are undeniable, the fit next to [Luka Doncic](/nba/players/2900426/luka-doncic/) is questionable, and something Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd will have to figure out if this team wants to succeed. However, the bigger questions come on the defensive side of the ball, where Dallas already ranked near the bottom of the league prior to this deal.
The Los Angeles Lakers are desperate. Everybody knows it, and no one is about to bail them out.
LeBron James admitted he's "definitely disappointed" the Los Angeles Lakers were unable to land Kyrie Irving ahead of the NBA trade deadline. With Irving.
Russell Westbrook has been dealt multiple times across his career and served as a lightning rod for criticism from the moment he arrived ahead of last season. LeBron sat down with @RealMikeWilbon to share his thoughts on the Lakers not being able to trade for his former teammate Kyrie Irving:
"I can't sit here and say I'm not disappointed on not being able to land such a talent." But it wasn't as simple as James rallying together with Los Angeles' young core and making a push for the postseason.

If everything works out, there’s a path for Irving to stay in Dallas long term, but given his history on and off the court, that’s a big if. With Irving gone, the Mavericks could potentially free up more than $25 million in cap space thanks to several expiring contracts, including those of Markieff Morris, Frank Ntilikina, Theo Pinson and Dwight Powell. Irving is in the final year of a four-year, $136.49 million contract that he signed with the Nets in the summer of 2019.
