Report: Nuggets trade Bones Hyland to Los Angeles Clippers for ... (Denver Stiffs)

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Denver Nuggets are trading talented second year guard Bones Hyland to the Los Angeles Clippers for two second ...

Just the other day we posted a poll of players Nuggets fans would like Denver to target in a potential Hyland deal. Two second round picks certainly doesn’t do the Nuggets any good for this season, unless they are able to flip those for a contributor before the deadline concludes. On the surface, this doesn’t seem like a great move for Denver as they move on from Hyland after just one season in which he showed some promise as a talented scorer.

had been in the market for another play-maker in the backcourt and will acquire a promising one in Hyland, who averaged 12.1 PPG and 3.0 APG on .399/.378/.866 shooting in 41 games (19.5 MPG) for the Nuggets this season. Hyland was a DNP-CD in Denver’s last four games leading up to the trade deadline. Because he’s only in the second year of his rookie contract, Hyland will remain under team control for two seasons beyond this one at a very reasonable rate ($2.3MM in 2023/24; $4.2MM in ’24/25). Denver will receive L.A.’s 2024 and 2025 second-round picks in the swap, according to Wojnarowski ( [Twitter link](https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1623757078345949184)). He's making 67% of his free throws this season after shooting below 40% at the line last year and 59% for his career. But with him now in the last guaranteed year of the extension he signed before the 2020-21 season, the veteran shooting guard is finally on the move. The Clippers are also adding center [Mason Plumlee](https://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/2488653/mason-plumlee) from the [Charlotte Hornets](/nba/team/_/name/cha/charlotte-hornets), sources said. Denver Nuggets reportedly trade Bones Hyland and Davon Reed in ... (CBS News)

[Jarred Vanderbilt](https://www.cbssports.com/nba/players/2892548/jarred-vanderbilt/), as well as [Wenyen Gabriel](https://www.cbssports.com/nba/players/2355020/wenyen-gabriel/). And since the Lakers were unlikely to re-sign him over the offseason due to their lack of financial flexibility, it also makes sense that they'd look to get some value in return for Bryant as opposed to losing him for nothing. Bryant is playing for a contract this season, so it makes sense that he would want an opportunity to play as much as possible in order to show his stuff. The move was likely one Bryant was on board with, as he had grown unhappy with his role in L.A. In 41 appearances (and 25 starts), Bryant averaged 12.1 points and 6.8 rebounds in 21.4 minutes per performance for the Lakers. The Lakers receive Denver's second-round picks in 2025, 2026 and 2029.

The [Charlotte Hornets](https://www.cbssports.com/nba/teams/CHA/charlotte-hornets/) will receive [Reggie Jackson](/nba/players/1646017/reggie-jackson/) and a 2028 second-round pick in exchange for Plumlee, [according to the Los Angeles Times' Andrew Greif](https://twitter.com/AndrewGreif/status/1623772671287922688). Plumlee can play the same role, and his presence means that the Clippers only have to go small when they want to. It is unclear, though, how big of a role Hyland will play when this (extremely deep) team is in the playoffs this season. The Clippers switch a ton, and opponents will target him defensively. He averaged 12.2 points in 19.5 minutes in 42 games for Denver this season, shooting 37.8 percent from 3-point range (and, less impressively, 42.5 percent from 2-point range).

Hyland also worked out with Clippers starting power forward [Marcus Morris Sr.](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/marcus-morris-sr-Kaurav0ZYZW2aYzm/) before the draft. Things flamed out with Hyland in Denver despite an All-Rookie season last year and a Rising Stars selection this year. That is: a combo guard with some point guard size and training, but one that is more comfortable as a shoot-first player than a true half-court facilitator. The Clippers consolidated their two veteran point guards in 26 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.
