The NFL season comes to a close Sunday with the Eagles and Chiefs facing off in Super Bowl LVII at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
The game will be televised nationally on FOX. Just as the Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles are finalizing game plans, playmakers on both sides are wondering what shenanigans to pull on football’s biggest stage. These days, the players are free to show off their creativity as well — within reason, of course. And then, just seconds before the snap, Smith-Schuster will decide on his touchdown celebration. With the Eagles in the Super Bowl and Hurts as their starting quarterback, a player accustomed to the spotlight (he reached three national championships in college and was a Heisman Trophy finalist) is set to explode to a different level of public fame. The KC offense led the NFL in pass plays of at least 25 yards with 49 (11 more than the Eagles, who finished second). They are 6-3 straight up as underdogs, with two of the defeats in 2018 and the other against Buffalo in Week 6 this season. The road to the Super Bowl ended with Gardner Minshew taking a knee in the NFC Championship Game. If you don’t count the preseason, it all started with a Kyzir White tackle for loss on a Jared Goff completion to D’Andre Swift in Week 1. And so, Sunday’s duel will serve as a reminder of the arduous, painful and at times bleak journey endured by Mahomes’ and Hurts’ forefathers. Their third-and-long conversion rate (42.9% percent, including the playoffs) is best in the NFL this year and the best for Kansas City in the Patrick Mahomes era. One Sunday back in late October, Steve Spagnuolo made a pilgrimage to one of his favorite bars, a corner spot at the corner of 11th Street and McKean in the heart of South Philadelphia.
While the Chiefs go for their second Super Bowl win in four years, the Eagles aim to get back on top for the first time since 2018.

In the end the Eagles would have to settle for another Elliott field goal, extending the lead to 27-21 with a minute remaining in the third quarter. First, the Eagles quarterback took a deep shot after a breakdown in the Chiefs secondary and found a wide-open Smith who would have strolled in for a score had he stayed in bounds. It was a pinpoint accurate throw from Hurts, who was playing with poise and patience in the biggest game of his career to keep the Chiefs — and by extension Mahomes — off the field. Kelce had a quiet second quarter but it did not take long for Mahomes to connect with his top target, although it was far from a simple catch for the Kansas City tight end. Mahomes was in pain on the ground in the final stages of the second quarter. He was already hobbled. Hurts rushed for 63 yards in the first half alone and eventually passed the Super Bowl record for rushing yards by a quarterback (Steve McNair with 64 in 1999). After a few unsuccessful attempts to punch it in from Boston Scott, Kenneth Gainwell then appeared to have cashed in on a 3rd-and-2 to score the opening touchdown of the game. Philadelphia’s much-improved quarterback had a moment to forget in the second quarter when Nick Bolton returned a Hurts’ fumble for 36 yards to tie up the game. Hurts had been near-perfect in the opening half, scoring on the ground and through the air as the Eagles took a 14-7 lead. Steve Levy called it a “killer” moment in commentary and in the end it would be the difference as Jalen Hurts’ four-touchdown heroics were not enough for Philadelphia. Referee Carl Cheffers was also just as adamant in the post-game pool report that it was the right call, declaring: “It was a clear case of a jersey grab that caused restriction”.
