The Guardian view on the Welsh language: words that matter (The Guardian)

Netflix's decision to buy the Welsh-language drama Dal Y Mellt shows that the Celtic dragon's roar can be heard around the world.

But the language has attained a level of cultural cachet despite the authorities’ apathy or even hostility to it. Welsh speakers use lots of bits of English too, happily switching between the two in the same sentence, and so do the characters in Dal Y Mellt. It was only in 1988 that Margaret Thatcher’s government made Welsh a Welsh, like Wales itself, is not a museum. This is not classical Eisteddfod Welsh; this is, since Roberts is a north Walian, Welsh as spoken in Wrexham and north-east Wales. It is also in Welsh – or, rather, mostly in Welsh.

Britain's abysmal numerical abilities are no laughing matter if we ... (City A.M.)

Britons pass off being bad at maths as a joke, but our lack of numerical skills are a serious challenge for our workforce and our future economy, ...

And without adequate financial education to protect them an increasing number of children are finding themselves the victims of financial exploitation. So, tonight at Guildhall, I’ll give the Lord Mayor’s annual Gresham College lecture on the role for financial services in boosting financial literacy and inclusion. In the UK today, over half of working-age adults have the numeracy level expected of a primary school child.

He found that many of the galaxies were moving too fast to be held by the gravity of the cluster’s visible matter. Small telescopes reveal several of the cluster’s galaxies. The Coma Cluster consists of more than a thousand galaxies, all moving through space together.

'Things that matter' in Soller (Majorca Daily Bulletin)

'Things that matter' as February 2023 starts have been exercising me this week. For many in Mallorca the most important was the win by Mallorca at football ...

This is particularly true of the months before the local elections in May this year. This is the pre carnival season and the game is on to create the prize-winning entry. Meanwhile in the hall the voting registrations and participating are done to the highest standard. Robins are very territorial and return to the same gardens, a bit like the walkers and cyclists who love the challenges and the hospitality of the Soller experience. The Soller train is back on track and the visitors are returning in greater numbers to the Soller Valley. The walkers and cyclists are here, and they are our harbingers of spring.

Kubernetes Probes (and Why They Matter for Autoscaling) (thenewstack.io)

In addition to validating our workloads' health, we can use them to monitor and gather information about other events affecting containers.

The liveness probe works similarly, but it’s used to check if the container is still running and responding to requests. If the liveness probe fails, Kubernetes will restart the container to try and recover it. In this article, we explored the important role of health checks for validating containers and how Kubernetes probes enable us to perform these checks. The correct use and configuration of startup, liveness and readiness probes is crucial to facilitate the completion of these autoscaling events. This was also why the startup probe was introduced: to validate that the container was starting up without immediately checking on the health of the application itself. The readiness probe sends an HTTP GET request to this endpoint, with a 5 second initial delay and a 1 second timeout. We must understand how fast our application starts up and how it behaves under load to decide what the various probe settings should be in order to meet The readiness probe informs the Kubernetes cluster that the container is ready to accept requests, such as one that allows a user to connect to a web application. The answer is that it depends on the nature of the containerized application. The readiness probe wouldn’t detect the unserviced requests because it assumes the application is running fine. The readiness probe can guarantee that the application running within the container is 100% ready to be used. The other two probes will be disabled until the startup probe is in a successful state.
