James Wiseman tallied 11 points and 5 rebounds in his first game with the Detroit Pistons, but was helpless as Celtics' Jayson Tatum erupted for 38.

Wiseman checked back in for Duren midway through the third quarter, and played with Stewart again, until Stewart left a couple of minutes later. Wiseman was once again the lone big on the floor until Duren spelled him with around nine minutes remaining in the game. When Wiseman entered late in the second, he shared the floor with Stewart. See all of our podcasts and daily voice briefings at [freep.com/podcasts](http://www.freep.com/podcasts). He looked gassed when he checked out with about nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter following 19 minutes of action, but checked back in with fewer than five minutes to play. It’s possible we’ll see him play power forward down the road, but the coaching staff utilized him as a center in his debut. Wiseman (5-for-9 shooting) scored his first points as a Piston on the following possession, driving from the free throw line and finishing a layup through Celtics center Luke Kornet. Coach Dwane Casey staggered Wiseman and Duren throughout the game. It was an ill-advised shot with 14 seconds remaining on the shot clock, and clanged off the rim, but he made up for it. The third-year 7-foot center was eager to make an impact when he checked in with 3:29 remaining in the opening quarter. The Pistons cut a 19-point deficit to five in the third quarter, using a 29-15 run powered by Bojan Bogdanovic and Isaiah Stewart. Malcolm Brogdon added 25 points and six assists off the bench for the

3 Things to expect in James Wiseman's Detroit debut (Detroit Bad Boys)

After days of trade speculation and fanbase angst this past weekend, James Wiseman will make his much-anticipated Detroit Pistons debut tonight in Detroit's ...

Placing him in the 99th percentile of finishers in this category, and it’s easy to see why: The antithesis of James Wiseman’s strengths offensively. Unfortunately for the former lottery pick, this efficiency was somewhat hallow in Golden State, with coach Steve Kerr electing to prioritize ball movement and weakside actions. For instance, if the first option of running and dunking is unavailable, Wiseman often looks to seal or post up his man at the basket, like below: In 25 possessions as the dive-man this season, Wiseman has registered 40 total points, equating to an efficient 1.6 points per possession. Aside taking a charge, there’s little defenses have been able to do when faced with Wiseman rolling downhill toward the painted area. Every now and then, he’ll provide help and swat an opponents shot in the front row: [Golden State Warriors](http://goldenstateofmind.com) gaining possession, Wiseman immediately hits full-stride, powering from baseline-to-baseline in the blink of an eye. In his limited action as a pro, Wiseman’s defensive aptitude has been underwhelming at best. With a clear investment from the franchise’s front office, Wiseman’s newfound home promises to be full of opportunity. Wiseman’s primary goal when galloping down the court is simple: get within the launch zone and dunk the ball. At 7 feet tall, Wiseman possess a unique cross-section of size and fluidity.

Detroit Pistons: Will James Wiseman play tonight vs. Celtics? (PistonPowered)

The Detroit Pistons will travel to Boston tonight to take on the Celtics and the big question is whether James Wiseman will make his debut.

James Wiseman is with the team and cleared to play, so should be making his debut tonight against Boston, who lost last night in overtime to the Bucks. We’ll have to wait to see how Wiseman is utilitzed, but one thing is for certain, the trade added a jolt of life to this season and fans of the Detorit Pisotns will be tuned in tonight. [James Wiseman](https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/wisemja01.html) will be one of the ongoing narratives for the rest of this season, as he is a questionable fit next to any of their bigs and may have to adjust his game to be more of a power forward than center.

After the game, Pistons coach Dwane Casey acknowledged that Wiseman looked good in his limited time on the court. "He did. He really did," Casey told reporters ...

The Pistons' game in Boston was the first step for Wiseman, though he now must wait eight more days to play again because of the NBA All-Star break. But he should be able to practice and build his conditioning so that when Detroit begins the second half in Orlando on Feb. Even though he didn't block shots, he was there, he was a big body at the rim and deterred some shots. Before the trade that was finalized Sunday, the 21-year-old had played in just two of the Warriors' previous 21 games, and he hadn't played more than 20 minutes in a game since Dec. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, but injuries, fit and championship asperations derailed any possibility of the Memphis product having a fair look with Golden State. But for Wiseman, just getting on the court is a win.

James Wiseman scores 11 points in debut, Pistons lose in Boston (The Detroit News)

James Wiseman finished with 11 points and five rebounds in his debut for the Pistons, who lost 127-109 against the Celtics.

The veteran forward scored 14 of his team-high 26 points in the third quarter. Sometimes it provides the Pistons with a much-needed boost of energy, but other times it results in a free throw for the other team. Tatum received MVP chants throughout the game, but none louder than when he exited the game with just over a minute left. He missed the shot, but immediately adjusted on the next play and attacked Kornet inside the paint, resulting in his first points as a Piston. He scored six points and grabbed two rebounds in his first six minutes of action. He finished with 11 points and five rebounds in 23 minutes of action.

Pistons' James Wiseman on playing for a new team: 'I'm going to get it' (The Athletic)

Wiseman details what his first game with the Pistons was like Wednesday night in Boston.

Wiseman came to Detroit with a lot of talent, but that talent wasn’t able to be unleashed often because of the stakes Golden State has been playing with. “He looked like the Wiseman I played against in high school. Then he’ll get to build on the next performance. The most important takeaway from Wednesday’s game is that Wiseman is going to get to build on it. There were even one or two instances in which the Celtics were hunting him on switches and Wiseman did a good job of staying in front of the ballhandler and forcing a pass or tough attempt. It’s going to take time for Wiseman to get adjusted to basketball at this level again. Said he was at the rim even though he didn't get blocks. He also put the ball on the deck and finished through contact. In his first stint, he tracked down an offensive rebound and finished a nice hook shot on the baseline while surrounded by two defenders. [Celtics](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/celtics/) 127-109 in the final game for both teams before the All-Star break. Additionally, it was the first time he played over 20 minutes since Dec. Maybe there are tweaks here and there, but, for the most part, the only thing that changes from playbook to playbook, city to city, is the terminology.

James Wiseman leaves room for growth in Detroit Pistons debut: 'I ... (Detroit Free Press)

In his first game since last Thursday's trade, new Detroit Pistons big James Wiseman showed what he can do on both sides of the floor.

Once he gets a feel for what we’re doing offensively — spacing, where to be, where to go — he’s going to contribute on both ends of the floor.” He checked in toward the end of the opening quarter and fired a 3-pointer with 14 seconds remaining on the shot clock. Wiseman spelled Duren throughout the night, and shared time with Stewart on the floor. He wasn’t credited with a block, but he defended the paint without fouling. “I’ve got his back and whatever he needs, any questions, he knows I’m there for him.” He was a big body at the rim and deterred some shots. There’s more to Wiseman’s offensive bag than he was able to show with the Warriors. He drove past Luke Kornet for a layup on the next possession after the missed 3; later in the quarter, grabbed Cory Joseph's blocked 3-pointer and made a midrange jumper with 10 seconds left. He has soft touch and showcased it against the Celtics. He described the previous six days as a “blur.” Defensively, just being a presence in the paint.” Gary Payton II’s failed physical with the Golden State Warriors stopped Wiseman from practicing with his new team until Tuesday, five days after the deal was initially agreed to, and two days after the trade was formally approved.

Analyzing James Wiseman's debut with the Pistons (mlive.com)

James Wiseman finished with 11 points and five rebounds in his debut with the Detroit Pistons during Wednesday's loss to the Boston Celtics.

To be clear, Wednesday night was a very small sample size of what Wiseman can do for the Pistons moving forward. On his first made basket, he beat Boston’s Sam Hauser off the dribble after the assist from Killian Hayes, and then finished with a strong layup on the 7-foot-2 Kornet. On his third one, the former Memphis Tiger was able to put the ball on the floor and finished at the rim with several Celtics players draped all over him. Because the acquisition is still fresh, it is too early to say whether Pistons general manager Troy Weaver struck gold with landing Wiseman. He also showed that he can step out and guard bigs on the perimeter, an area that Pistons lacked success in. After teammate Cory Joseph airballed a three-point attempt, Wiseman went after the loose ball, used his long arms to tap it to himself, and then drilled a near 10-foot jumper. After all, the trade was in limbo after Gary Payton II failed his physical, preventing Wiseman’s full participation in practice with his new teammates. Last week after the trade was announced, Pistons coach Dwane Casey predicted there would be a learning curve for his newest big man. He no problem going after loose balls, showcasing the hustle and scrappiness of a Casey team. In 23 minutes of action, it’s safe to say he did. From the moment he checked into Wednesday’s game vs. Defensively, he was solid.
