Prep: Review each movement (along with scaling options), leading the first round movement-by-movement. Perform each movement for 1-minute before switching. If you’re running two heats, be sure to have athletes in the second heat do some burpees and jumping air squats to stay warm during the time they’re waiting. - Muscle Ups: This will be highly specific to each individual and their ability/goals. - Toes-to-bar: Tell athletes to choose the scaling option that will allow them to do quick sets and be consistent across the 50 reps. Alternate who is on the rower every minute, completing three total rounds of rowing and mobility. - Delayed start: If you have equipment limitations, but want more time to teach/review the movements, you can use a delayed start to account for equipment/space limitations. - Mobility (5:00-12:00) If athletes are too tired from the workout intensity, encourage them to do additional stretching and/or rolling during this time. In my experience, this model is great for building community and creating an atmosphere that makes the Open feel special. - Two heats: If your class size outnumbers the rowers available, you can run heats back-to-back with a five minute break in between. This is the very start of the workout and you definitely do not want to come off the rower ultra-fatigued. When you do kip, make the turnover decisive and drive your head through. You do not want to get anywhere near your max set during the workout. By dropping the bar, you skip the eccentric load of the movement, so saving You do not want to fail any reps, so don’t let yourself get anywhere near the failure point. If you want a great workout, don’t have at least 1-5 toes-to-bar in the bank and want to compete on the scaled leader board, scale away. ‘You need to think about what you want to get out of the Open. If you want the highest possible placing and are looking to complete all the workouts as prescribed this year, or if you can do at least 5-10 unbroken toes-to-bar (T2B), you should think about going RX. It's more a case of dealing with it when you get to it!
