The South Sudan Regional Refugee Response Plan (RRP) is an annual comprehensive multi-agency response that outlines the strategies and actions needed to respond to the ongoing South Sudan refugee crisis in the five main countries of asylum: the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda. The interagency response plan is developed according to the Refugee Coordination Model (RCM) and draws from the response plans developed in each country. Some of the vulnerabilities and risk stem from exposure to endemic violence and the impact of climate shocks in the country of origin and others are magnified by prolonged displacement in situations where the needs outstrip the available resources for assistance, reliance.

Surviving the floods of South Sudan (Geographical)

South Sudan's refugee crisis is the worst in Africa, with more than 2.3 million South Sudanese refugees fleeing intercommunal violence to neighbouring countries ...

Relief workers and the people of South Sudan are bracing themselves for what the rains will bring this year. Our monthly print magazine is packed full of cutting-edge stories and stunning photography, perfect for anyone fascinated by the world, its landscapes, people and cultures. Water temperatures in the Indian Ocean are still high as the much-awaited El Niño weather conditions have yet to arrive. People are working around the clock with pumps, buckets, excavators and heavy machinery to keep the water at bay and prevent the dykes from collapsing. Food supplies were airlifted in, but the UNHCR fears that it’s running out of cash to keep such efforts going. In Maban, in Upper Nile state, trucks carrying food and much-needed relief items couldn’t reach the Doro Refugee Camp, home to 75,000 refugees, as roads were blocked by water. According to Médecins Sans Frontières, the stagnant water has contributed to a rise in malaria and water-borne illnesses, extreme malnutrition, more frequent snake bites and an increase in diabetes. I planted maize next to my home, but when the second flood came, it destroyed it and I didn’t even get to harvest it… The region has long coped with seasonal flooding, soaking up the overflow from Lake Victoria via the White Nile and the runoff from the surrounding highlands in Ethiopia and the Central African Republic. South Sudan’s refugee crisis is the worst in Africa, with more than 2.3 million South Sudanese refugees fleeing intercommunal violence to neighbouring countries and an estimated 2.2 million people internally displaced. [civil war](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Sudanese_Civil_War); a peace deal signed in 2018 has done little to stop the violence. In South Sudan, millions of people endure natural disasters, conflict and political instability.

While basketball participation in South Sudan has skyrocketed, and the federation is making plans to start an under-17 and under-19 team. In the round of 16, they shocked the continent by beating Kenya and advancing to the quarter-finals. By the time South Sudan gained independence, Deng was one of the best basketball players in the world. As a result, some of the players born abroad had never been to South Sudan, while others hadn’t returned since they were children. He had visions of South Sudan as an international basketball powerhouse, but with little money coming in, he had to fund his own dream. The team also added proven guard Sunday Dech and Bol Kuol from Australia. He didn’t have any experience but quickly took to the role. He understands what a win would mean to his teammates, but also to the people South Sudan, dozens of whom will be cheering from the stands this weekend. After decades of a divisive civil war that left an estimated two and half million dead and millions more displaced, independence from Sudan brought with it a chance to determine a new future. He dove head first into the project. Powered entirely by pride, the new team played their first unofficial game just days after independence. “We all know how important theses games are,” the team’s Australian-raised captain, Kuany Kuany told the City Review, a South Sudanese website.
