Oscar nominees Brendan Fraser, Stephanie Hsu, Paul Mescal and more talk about the last time they cried while watching a movie.
Other films that brought tears included “Women Talking” and “Avatar: The Way of Water.” “It’s something when you are on flights…a nostalgic thing, I was completely surprised myself,” he said. “It’s painfully relevant today, shockingly and shamefully relevant.”
The issue was that Darren Aronofsky and distributor A24 were insistent that the public and voters see "The Whale" in a theater or not at all.
The conversation switches from “Where can I see this movie?” to “Let’s stay home and watch it tonight.” People talk about Fraser and “The Whale” just when they’ve overdosed on Butler and “Elvis,” which have been at the center of the Best Actor conversation for months. The further good news is that people can now cry to their heart’s content while watching “The Whale” without feeling the least bit self-conscious, since they can now experience it in the discomfort of their own living room. “The Whale” can finally be seen by the largest possible audience at a moment when its star most needs maximum exposure. This is a very good thing from where I sit, as I consider Fraser’s work as Charlie in “The Whale” to be a stunningly moving performance, not to mention a moment of considerable redemption for an actor who has rarely been accorded his due. It was a shame, not because I at all dislike or discount Butler – he was sensational as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll – but because on a level playing field, Fraser should be the choice. As the astounding success of Amazon has taught us, people want things delivered to them and want them delivered now. The issue was that producer-director Darren Aronofsky and distributor A24 were insistent that the public and SAG voters see “The Whale” in a theater or not at all. At this late stage of the game, those backing “The Whale” have changed up the narrative by giving the movie a sudden burst of availability. [Brendan Fraser](https://www.goldderby.com/t/brendan-fraser/) (for “ [The Whale](https://www.goldderby.com/t/the-whale/)”) or [Austin Butler](https://www.goldderby.com/feature/austin-butler-elvis-oscar-interview-transcript-1205298155/) (for “Elvis”) is The Chosen One, circa 2023. While there have been several screenings of the film for critics and voters, those behind it had made it a little tough to find the movie outside of a theater. The perception was that “The Whale” campaign was running low on steam, and it was potentially impacting its star’s chances – particularly at the SAGs. Or in the age of COVID, even as we’re undeniably past the height of virus fear, maybe they just didn’t want to have to leave the house to catch Fraser’s gut-wrenching performance as a morbidly obese man struggling to reconcile with his estranged teenage daughter before it’s too late.

He was the son of Canadian parents Carol Mary (née Genereux; 1937–2016) and Peter Fraser. Brendan Fraser had his breakthrough in 1992 when he appeared in the comedy Encino Man and the drama School Ties. His role in the latter gave him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Oscar-nominee Aronofsky also supported the use of prosthetics to play the role. And I don't know what the metric is to qualify to play the role. He has already won a number of Best Actor prizes at film festivals across America and the world. Fraser first appeared on our screens in the early 1990s with movies like Encino Man, School Ties and The Scout. "There's no way you can cast someone to play this job, so we had to use makeup to get there," Aronofsky told Newsweek. Speaking to Newsweek at the London Film Festival in October 2022, he responded to the criticism saying: "I'm not a small man.

That, to me, makes The Whale truly a relatable, heartbreaker of an experience. He explained that the roles just got smaller and less physically demanding by design. He cleared, however, that certain aspects of the plot are semi-autobiographical. Fraser’s vulnerability and maturity as an actor, hiding under heavy, unbearable prosthetics from head to toe, shines through practically throughout the 1-hour-57 minute feature. He hides out in a squat, darkly-lit, one-level house where all he does daily is eat his way to death. He is also gay and separated from his wife.
There is no doubt that BAFTA and Golden Globe champ Butler has a lot of advantages, but critics' fave Fraser has the odds lead.

David Ehrlich ( [IndieWire](https://www.indiewire.com/2022/05/elvis-review-baz-luhrmann-1234728121/)) raves that Butler “more than just nail Presley’s singing voice and stage presence.” Despite being the only nomination for “Elvis” at the SAG Awards, Butler can easily win with a populist vote against Fraser. Farrell also is holding steady in third with 4/1 odds and “The Banshees of Inisherin” is the only film this year to have all their actors nominated individually and for Best Film Ensemble. Butler sits right behind Fraser with 18/5 odds to win the SAG Award, but he is in a much stronger film with “Elvis,” which has overperformed across all award shows and guilds, garnering eight BAFTA nominations and nine Oscar bids, including Best Picture, the latter number tripling the tally for “The Whale,” which only received mentions for Fraser, Chau and Best Makeup & Hairstyling. Meanwhile, Nighy and Sandler both have 9/2 odds for the guild. Indeed, his portrayal has been widely praised (including even from Presley’s family members) and like all the aforementioned actors, he goes through a vocal transformation and handles the role with detail through his movements and speech. [Variety](https://variety.com/2022/film/reviews/the-whale-review-brendan-fraser-darren-aronofsky-1235359338/)) calling his work “more haunting than he has ever been” and “intensely lived-in.” Not to mention that Fraser goes through a transformation, physically through prosthetics, similar to SAG and Oscar winners Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”) and Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”). Ever since “The Whale” premiered at Venice International Film Festival and then later at TIFF, it has been an increasing feeling that it would be the perfect moment to award Fraser, who has been working in the industry for decades and has taken a backseat in his career in the last few years prior to the movie. The SAG Awards usually can signal a tide change for the frontrunner status and it is looking like it will be a tight heat between the two actors. “The Whale” is also making a good run at the box office, grossing $15.9 million against a $3 million budget since it opened in theaters December 9. Right now, it is looking like the guild’s battle is between two actors with very different stories, Butler and Fraser.
