Pope Francis has condemned LGBTQ criminalization. Now what? (National Catholic Reporter)

Pope Francis answers questions from journalists aboard the flight from Juba, South Sudan, to Rome Feb. 5. (CNS/Paul Haring). by Jeannine Gramick.

He said he was not aware of anyone being imprisoned for homosexuality and felt that each country should be allowed to address the subject as it chooses. Some Catholics there said that homosexuality was a sin and therefore a crime or that "it didn't exist." [synod on the family](https://www.ncronline.org/feature-series/synod-family/stories) in Rome, many bishops also desired to see an approach to homosexuality that was based on current science. The pope's trip made it abundantly evident that LGBTQ issues are a source of controversy on that continent. Similarly, LGBTQ people and serious-thinking Catholics are increasingly ignoring the church's teaching about homosexuality and gender. Catholics [ignore or reject the teaching on contraception](https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2016/09/28/4-very-few-americans-see-contraception-as-morally-wrong/), but have not left the church. After honest sharing and patient listening in the world's Catholic dioceses, LGBTQ issues, and other topics about sexuality and gender, have emerged as leading themes in the continental stage of the synod. He does not fear the sensus fidelium of the people of God. Rather than finding new ways to explain the faith to people in the 21st century, the church repeated formulas many found meaningless." It is precisely such a development of doctrine that LGBTQ Catholics and their allies have been calling for. Furthermore, the word can promote self-hatred if people think of themselves as "disordered." The word "disordered" can be demeaning.

The news of the war that broke out a year ago and went on all this year means a lot of sadness for us. Precisely because of the very fact of a meeting with the Hungarian faithful. With great joy we received the news of the Holy Father's visit to Hungary. Instead, a pastoral visit, a meeting with the community of the faithful, was something that had been desired for many years.

Pope Francis says he does not 'condemn capitalism' in new book (America Magazine)

Pope Francis added: “This is what I have tried to do since I was ordained a priest and in these years of the pontificate, always with the firm purpose of being faithful to God and to the church and helpful to Catholics and to all people of good will. He said, “I responded without hesitation: a pastor.” He added, “It was difficult to imagine at that moment that 12 years later, I would become that pastor!” In the introduction to this 352-page book, Pope Francis praised the two journalists for their “perseverance.” He recalled that Mr. “The proposal to visit Argentina is still valid; it’s not right to say that I do not want to go,” the pope said. Ambrogetti had asked Pope Francis what he thought the profile of the next pope should be. “Of course, one thing is the saving, the investment that is so important for production and for the creation of employment. But, sometimes, there are some who make political gain out of this.” He mentioned the example of one candidate for political office who attended his Mass in Santa Marta and afterward asked if he could have a photo with him. “In no part of the Bible is there a commandment to produce poverty,” Pope Francis stated. “To affirm that is a lie.” Pope Francis clarified his position on the economy—a position that has been misunderstood by many commentators, especially in the United States—in conversations with the Mr. He explained that the beatitude “Blessed are the poor in spirit” means “the person who is not attached to riches.” But, he added, “in no way is it bad to produce wealth for the good of all,” indeed, “to produce it is an act of justice. This new book reviews several of the main events of this pontificate, enriched by the conversations of the journalists with Pope Francis over these past 10 years.

Pope Francis plans “unprecedented” reform of pontifical universities (Aleteia EN)

The Pope plans to reform the pontifical educational establishments in Rome so that they can "sing as a choir."

The most popular discipline studied is theology (22.1% of students), which is offered in 15 out of the 22 Roman institutions, followed by philosophy (13.2%) and canon law (7.4%). These institutions are also very international: On average, there is one Italian student for every eight non-Italian students, the latter coming from 124 countries across the world and from all continents. They represent 8% of the students in the Eternal City, including considering public and private universities and colleges. The evaluation, which was presented at a press conference on February 24, was made in light of the 5th anniversary of Pope Francis’ Apostolic Constitution, Veritatis Gaudium (2018), in which he had reformed the pontifical academic institutions. These institutions also operate thanks to the work of 459 employees in the administrative sector. He ended his speech with the image of Christ as a “choirmaster,” whose hands direct the whole of humanity and at the same time each individual.

Undeniably, Francis has offered a fresh and comprehensive re-reception of the teaching of Vatican II. [A Church of the Poor](https://orbisbooks.com/products/a-church-of-the-poor), theologian Clemens Sedmak contended, rather, that what we see in this Latin American pope is a "joyful orthodoxy." Francis has made it clear that, if authentic church authority is to be a genuine service rather than a burden, the structures and exercise of authority must undergo a pronounced "decentralization" (Evangelii Gaudium, Paragraph 16). This Jesuit pope's exercise of authority has exemplified a balanced ecclesial application of subsidiarity; he respects local autonomy but is not afraid to intervene where the welfare of the whole church demands it. Pope Francis uses incense to venerate a Marian statue as he celebrates the opening Mass of the Synod of Bishops for the Amazon in St. In much of his writing the pope has moved away from the rigid lay-clergy binary encouraged by his predecessors and toward a more expansive and relational understanding of public ministry in the church. As a comprehensive assessment is impossible, I will consider the related contributions of this pontificate to the theology, structure, and exercise of ministry and authority. These overlooked papal initiatives have provided a more formal status and ritual expression to a range of ministries open to the laity. Were these papal initiatives to be fully and creatively implemented, as they have yet to be, they could go a long way toward deconstructing the strict lay-clergy binary that has hobbled the church for centuries. For the pope, "laicity" is not a negative term, identifying the non-ordained; rather it identifies the fundamental missionary calling conferred upon all of us in baptism: The meeting was to reflect on the apostolic constitution Praedicate Evangelium ("Preach the Gospel") on the reform of the Roman Curia. The full text of that lecture will appear in the March issue of Theological Studies.

To the expression “market economy” John Paul II added “social”, a social market economy. He then announced the creation of the Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops in order to promote synodality in the Church again. From its start to today, the Vatican has always been at the centre of the action. From here, we do what we can to help the people. The economy has to be a social economy. It was not just a matter of renewal, but also a call to make the Church more and more alive. The Council opened the door to greater maturity, more in tune with the signs of the times. The day after the beginning of the invasion, I personally went to the Russian embassy. Why is the ongoing implementation of the Council so close to your heart? The Council did not only mark a renewal of the Church. Historians say it takes a century for the decisions of a Council to have full effect and be implemented. The reasons for that interview had to do with the centenary of the First World War and the terrorist attacks on Paris in November 2015 and Bruxelles on 22 March 2016.

“A synod is a gathering of the faithful, a reunion of faith conducted by the Holy Spirit and also tempted by the evil spirit.” As provincial, he was also chancellor of the Jesuit-run university in Cordoba and there got to know an association of Belgians led by Jean Sonet, S.J., a Belgian Jesuit, that supported the university financially. “To consider the synod a parliament is an error,” Francis said. While the first part of the interview was devoted to Vatican II and synodality, Pope Francis also answered questions raised by Mr. The main character of a synod is the Holy Spirit. The latter was “a social theme” and, he said, all the bishops felt that “now is the moment” for such a consultation. Father Brandsma, a Dutch Carmelite friar and journalist, was executed by the Nazis in the Dachau concentration camp in 1942 and was canonized by Pope Francis last year. And so he announced the creation of the synod of bishops with the intention of promoting synodality in the church.” Francis said that over the past 60 years, the synod began to enter into people’s consciousness, and questions were raised about who could vote in the synod and whether women could vote. “The council took this step forward,” the pope said, “without breaking from the roots, because it cannot do that, but rather ensuring that the fruit continues on.” Indeed, he said, “the council is the voice of the church for this whole time. John XXIII, the pope who convoked that council, was “a man who was open to the inspirations of the Lord, and it is through such persons that God speaks to his people. Francis said the council, which ran from 1962 to 1965, “not only brought about a renewal of the church. “The [Second Vatican] Council was a visit of God to his church.
