'Scream 6' Box Office Could Set New Franchise Record (Variety)

Half a dozen movies in, and the bloodletting hasn't eased up — or gotten less popular. “Scream VI,” the latest installment in the long-running horror series ...

Adam Driver stars in “65” as a pilot who crash-lands on a mysterious planet that happens to be Earth… “Scream VI” will contend with last weekend’s champ “Creed III” — which opened mightily with $58 million — for first place on box office charts. By bringing back franchise stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette — and adding in newcomers Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega and Dylan Minnette — to the quiet town of Woodsboro, 2022’s “Scream” earned positive reviews and ended its box office run with $81 million domestically and $137 million. Records aside, the newest entry is expected to improve upon the start of last year’s hit “Scream” (not to be confused with 1996’s “Scream”), which scored a solid $30 million debut in January. As of now, 2000’s “Scream 3” remains the franchise’s top opener with $34 million. [Paramount](https://variety.com/t/paramount/) is releasing the film in 3,670 North American theaters on Friday.

Where to Watch 'Scream VI': Showtimes and Streaming Status (Collider.com)

Here's how, when, and where you can watch Scream 6, the latest installment in the meta-slasher franchise.

Both horror and dark humor fuel this series so if you’re a fan of the Scream series, you might want to check out some of these movies below! Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994) - Wes Craven is an iconic horror film director that brought his magic to the first four Scream films. This leads to a series of strange and unfortunate events as Millie struggles to return to her own body, while the Butcher enjoys his newfound freedom with a new identity. It was then released digitally and was available to stream on Paramount+ at the beginning of March, only a month and a half later. The Scream movies became iconic for many reasons, but certainly one of them was its impressive blend of genres and tones. Scream VI will also be available to stream on Paramount+ eventually, but no date has been given yet as to when it will be available to subscribers. If Scream VI follows suit, it could be released in late May/early June, so keep an eye out for future updates here on Collider soon. 27 years after the original Scream film was released back in 1996, this iconic slasher series continues to craft lots of new scares as this latest Ghostface killer brings their wrath to New York City. Some menacing shots in the trailer suggest that she could be slipping to the dark side as she grapples with these feelings. Half-sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter (Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega) have left Woodsboro behind to start a new chapter of their lives in the Big Apple. The body count is already looking higher than usual as Ghostface murders innocent civilians in public and adds weapons like a shotgun to their arsenal. Uncovering the new Ghostface’s identity will undoubtedly be a difficult task with actors such as Dermot Mulroney, Samara Weaving, and Tony Revolori bringing their new characters into the mix.

Movie studios love their low-cost, high-earning properties, so we are here again with another Scream sequel for slasher fans. Before Scream VI hits theaters ...

So I think Tara is involved in this one and is perhaps one of the leaders of this Ghostface Cult being theorized by fans involving Stu. Tara’s inhaler was also the reason Sam, Richie and Tara went to Amber’s in the first place. I also thought there would be some link back to Stu Macher (and I still think that’s the direction this franchise is headed). I don’t think the killer in this movie is Stu but is he behind the scenes pulling the strings and will show up in a post-credit scene? My pick for the killer in Scream 6 is going to be Tara, who we find out was also in cahoots with Amber and Richie (Jack Quaid) in the previous film. BZ: Admittedly, I’ve been way too deep into theories about who the killer will be and it’s been difficult to make a concrete assessment.

Scream 6 review: A brutal Ghostface return that proves too familiar (digitalspy.com)

Scream 6 is out now in cinemas, but is it a killer sequel for the long-running horror franchise? Here's our Scream VI review.

Not all fans loved the reveal of Amber and Richie as the killers in Scream, but at least it allowed the filmmakers to mock a current trend in cinema with toxic fandom. With the new sandbox to play in, we get an unpredictable subway ride (with our heroes split over two trains) and a tense stalk-and-shoot in a bodega. However, there's now such a strong cast that you'll forgive the movie for being a bit blunt at times. If they get to return for a third outing to complete a 'requel trilogy', though, hopefully all bets will truly be off. Most, but not all, sequences are capped with brutal kills, with Ghostface showing a particular penchant this time around for stabbing in various parts of a victim's face. It effectively twists the sequence into two cold opens in one, subverting fan expectations and setting the stage for what could be a totally new type of Scream film. [unexpected departure of Neve Campbell](https://www.digitalspy.com/movies/a43137611/scream-6-sidney-neve-campbell-exit/), marking the first time a Scream movie wouldn't feature Sidney Prescott. You'd think it was just a marketing ploy, but the excellent cold open to Scream 6 will make you think otherwise. But however they're moving on (or not moving on in Sam's case), their attempts at starting new lives are about to hit a dead end. The main disappointment, then, is that eventually Scream 6 does start playing by familiar rules. Ghostface is back to end things, and the "core four," as Chad christens them, face another fight for their lives. Scream 6 might not be as strong as 2022's offering, but that won't stop fans from having a bloody good time.

'Scream VI' Review: Ghostface Slices Through NYC in This ... (Collider.com)

'Scream 6' finds new blood in the Scream franchise, a nostalgic look at the past that also manages to feel original in its apporach.

Scream VI might be a sequel to a requel, but this franchise still finds new ways to feel original in its approach to this world. It finds just the right combination of nostalgia and fresh blood, telling a story that manages to feel familiar in its winks at the past, but breaking with tradition in ways that are exciting and new for this series. But Vanderbilt and Busick go even further than Scream 2, as we learn that the killer has a “shrine” of sorts dedicated to the history of the killers. Further, with this new Ghostface leaving masks from previous killers at the scenes of his attacks, the answer to the new killer might be in the past. However, the internet has run rampant with rumors that Sam might’ve actually been the killer, setting up this pair to get away with her murders, and with her still feeling the influence of her father, Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich), she worries that murder might be in her family’s blood. This self-awareness has made Scream one of the most fun slasher series, as each additional entry can use new trends in horror and films in general to examine the culture of the time.

'Scream 6' Review: The Best Scream Movie Since the '90s — With ... (Inverse)

There probably never should have been a Scream sequel. (How do you top the smartest horror movie ever made? Spoiler alert: You can't.) ...

But at the end of the day, the star of Scream 6 is the franchise itself. But the meta-commentary here is basic at best, and its Ghostface is one of the worst. Of course, the most important hallmark of any Scream movie is its meta-commentary. Scream 6 is a movie deeply obsessed with the history of Ghostface, but that obsession can’t make up for the movie’s failure to produce an intriguing new addition to horror-villain canon. As a movie, Scream 6 ranks near the top of the franchise. A franchise was inevitable, and in the latest entry from returning directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Scream grapples directly with what it means to be a franchise anyway.

Scream 6 Keeps the Franchise Fresh and We Love That About It (Gizmodo)

Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera are joined by Courteney Cox and Hayden Panettiere for the horror sequel.

When the ending of a Scream movie isn’t the best part of a Scream movie, that’s a refreshing, welcome change of pace and Scream VI delivers. It’s a more complete movie, a (slightly) more subtle movie, and definitely a more surprising movie throughout instead of just at the end. Where the first five films were very, very driven by movies and movie culture at every corner, Scream VI is not. And there too is a good example of where Scream VI goes up against expectations. That uncertainty continues throughout the movie because a) that’s what Scream movies do, and b) this Scream movie is set during Halloween. Yes, there’s a scene where Mindy breaks down the type of movie they’re in, and sure the killer collects props from the in-universe Scream-equivalent franchise Stab, but those are just the dressing, not the main course. And what better time to get a new laptop or desktop computer than during the Lenovo Annual Sale? Right now through March 16, you can save a up to a whopping 75% off PCs and electronics at the retailer. Plus, all of this is heightened because this Scream, as expected, has a clever, relatable thematic center that makes it more modern than even its 2022 predecessor. You just know this isn’t going the way it should. [who brought us last year’s Scream V](https://gizmodo.com/the-new-scream-knows-what-youre-expecting-and-surprises-1848338516), which includes writers Guy Busick and Jamie Vanderbilt and directors [Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett](https://gizmodo.com/screams-new-directors-on-keeping-secrets-stab-movies-1848335386), so it has a lot of what made that film good going for it. 'Scream 6' brings back some familiar faces and takes the same old ... (AZCentral.com)

Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera return in 'Scream VI.' The franchise moves everything from the Ghostface call to the many stabbings to New York city.

Ortega became a major star between the last film and this one, thanks to “Wednesday.” She wears it well, staying true to Tara while somehow being, I don’t know, bigger. Mindy has found a partner, Anika (Devyn Nedoka) and Chad has a roommate, Ethan (Jack Champion), who has one of the best lines in the film. From the start “Scream” was constructed as not just a slasher film but a commentary on slasher films, a knowing in-joke in which the killers and some of the victims are aware of what’s going on. Of course there are going to be a lot of Ghostface masks on the subway. But the franchise is flexible enough that the final girl has changed, and now the original — Sidney Prescott — isn’t in “Scream VI” at all. The most pressing question for viewers in this installment is: what’s it going to take to keep Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara (Jenna Ortega) alive?

Scream VI Is the Fun, Thrilling Slash in the Arm the Franchise ... (Consequence)

In Scream 6, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have a lock on the franchise. Read our review here.

[Scream](https://consequence.net/tag/scream/) was a dicey one when the fifth entry, titled simply Scream in a nod to the naming conventions of most “franchise refreshes,” came out just last year. This means everyone, whether it’s legacy characters (Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers, Hayden Panetierre’s returning Scream 4 victim Kirby) or the new leads or anyone else standing in the way, is on the chopping block. But it turns out Ghostface isn’t done with them, even in the Big Apple, as ol’ Ghosty starts his work back up in their vicinity, all with a previous killer’s mask left behind as a calling card.

And while some of the praise belongs to the closeness the writers give us to the Core Four, a not insignificant amount of the credit needs to go to the aforementioned actors. The heart and soul of Scream 6 is that aforementioned Core Four (made up of the Meeks-Martin twins and the Carpenter sisters). We’re not going to get into the nitty gritty of that monologue, but one thing the young Meeks-Martin highlights is that the gore must be amplified in a rebootquels’ sequel, and boy is it ever! This time it’s full meta, and the butt of the joke is Scream itself. You’ll see plenty of shoutouts to your horror favorites both old and new sprinkled throughout the movie (you already saw plenty of them in the trailer alone), and none of the self-exploration feels over-the-top or like it’s making a mockery of Wes Craven’s legacy. But, while it is the Sidney Prescott of it all, it’s not what you think.

My money is on a "Cult of Ghostface" in Scream 6 as the most viable later-franchise twist, which seems right in line after Scream roasted contemporary "arthouse" horror and the rebootquel effect. It's essentially a sequel to Leprechaun in the Hood without care taken to honor past entries, playing outside older franchise lines with low-riders and bongwater gags. The movie could have happened in San Francisco or Seattle or Boston without anyone really noticing, and it feels like something cool could have been done here to make such a drastically different city feel like more integral part of the proceedings. The marketing campaign made a big deal of Ghostface moving to the city, but the Big Apple isn't really a character in the film outside of one subway scene that could have happened on any metropolis public transit. Meanwhile, the survivors of Scream (2022) have created their own pod when we reunite with them in Scream VI. It's a different backdrop than Woodsboro, but it never feels like the crew needed to be in New York or that it added anything special to this Ghostface's kills or overall motive. We'll go ahead and tell you that the killer's time with a firearm is showcased in its entirety during the trailer and otherwise doesn't stray from their murder weapon of choice. The first rule you learn in screenwriting class is that a good movie comes with a surprising but inevitable end.
