Back in 2021, three beetles discovered in Australia were named after Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres thanks to their vivid colourings that matched the three legendary birds. [The Straits Times](https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/environment/new-species-of-cockroach-discovered-in-singapore-named-after-pokemon) reports (via [Nintendo Soup](https://nintendosoup.com/random-newly-discovered-species-of-cockroach-named-after-the-pokemon-pheromosa/)) that this new species was found in Singapore back in 2016/17, but its discovery and origins were a complete mystery. Comparing this new species' long antenna, hooded wings, and long legs to the white cockroach-like UB, Foo — who co-authored the finding of the creature — admitted that he and his colleague are all Pokémon fans, hence the name.

The discovery marks the first time that the cockroach genus Nocticola was discovered in Singapore, with it being the ninth known fully-winged species of the genus. “The discovery, like with the other species I described, is quite enjoying and fulfilling. Honestly though, I have been working with cockroaches since 2015, so the excitement has dwindled a bit, but again it is still fun,” he said. It was named after a Pokémon known as Pheromosa whose “design and color may have been inspired by the American cockroach that has molted,” the journal article said. The cockroach was not unknown in Singapore by nature observers, but it was not formally documented and studied. Only 32 species under the same Nocticolidae family have been documented from Africa, India, Southeast Asia and Their closest relative is a cockroach from Borneo, but it is still unknown where the Nocticola pheromosa originated. It is the first time a cockroach from the genus Nocticola has been detected in Singapore.
