The sequel to 2019's 'Shazam', a movie by David F. Sandberg is to be released in theaters Friday, March 17.

The second teaser turns the action up even more, portraying several action-packed fight scenes and epic scenes of mass destruction. Jack Dylan Grazer will reprise his role as Frederick “Freddy” Freeman, with Adam Brody playing the grown-up version of his superhero. “And I think that we’ve gotten lucky with the next four movies,” he continued “because we have ‘Shazam’ which leads into ‘Flash’, which resets everything. Movie review: 'Shazam! 2' frustrates with cluttered story - UPI.com (UPI.com)

"Shazam! Fury of the Gods" introduces a lot of good ideas in the sequel, but unfortunately abandons most of them for the usual superhero business.

It's just the thing Shazam and company have to undo at the end. That is a poignant milestone worthy of following after the first film's loving portrayal of a caring foster home. A lot of superhero sequels coincidentally deal with the heroes losing their powers, too. The reason for Billy's anxiety is that he's about to turn 18 and age out of the foster system. Shazam and his friends will have to stop the Daughters and work out their differences. Fury of the Gods, in theaters Friday, unfortunately struggles with the sort of identity crisis that confronts many superhero sequels.

Shazam 2 Film Review: A Superhero Series Worth Saving (IndieWire)

Eventually, Shazam and those naughty sisters (plus a third, who we won’t spoil here) have to reckon with each other, after the goddesses steal Freddy, seal off Philly, and snatch the powers of the rest of the family. Fury of the Gods” is doing them well, the film is a sterling reminder of how truly wide the genre can be, and how increasingly narrow it feels. Billy’s entire ethos hinges on his family motto — “all or none!” — that requires all of his foster siblings (and fellow superheroes) to participate in said missions, which have gone so haywire that the troupe has earned the moniker “The Philly Fiascos.” Despite the universal stakes of what’s unfolding, the action feels relatively contained (the monsters look good, the lightning Shazam so often employs has never looked better, but it all feels as if was shot on a single backlot). While the first film chronicled the dizzy joy and total wackiness of a kid (a kid!) getting superpowers, its sequel takes that to its next logical stop: a couple of years into this hero thing, and young Billy Batson (Asher Angel returns to play the teenage hero when he’s not in Shazam get-up) is suffering from imposter syndrome. And, as continues to be the case with any and all major superhero films, they get really big, with the fate of nothing less than the entire universe in the balance. Namely, it’s really scary for a film ostensibly aimed at kids (the film is rated PG-13, which allows the many teens who populate it to swear in normal cadence, but also makes room for some truly unsettling violence), but it’s also a bit confusing, played out of sequence (we later learn that the opening scene actually takes place days and days after the rest of the film kicks off), and it requires a whole mess of exposition. Young Darla (played by Faithe Herman as a kiddo, and the extraordinarily charming Meagan Good in her superhero form) just wants a kitten, Pedro (Jovan Armand and D.J. a giant magical stick last seen being broken in two by Shazam himself (Zachary Levi) at the end of the first film. Fury of the Gods](https://www.indiewire.com/t/shazam-fury-of-the-gods/),” our hero’s hometown of Philadelphia gets sealed into a giant, magical bubble. Fury of the Gods” doesn’t entirely recapture the giddy fun of the first film, its humor, sweetness, and delightfully human heroes remaining bright spots in a genre too often obsessed with the dark and the gritty. What better metaphor for this series’ place in the DC Universe, a sprawling franchise that never quite cohered and is now [getting a major retooling at the hands of new brass,](https://www.indiewire.com/2023/01/dc-studios-james-gunn-rebuild-1234805366/) do you need?

The sequel fails to really explain how Djimon Hounsou's wizard is back after turning to dust in the last movie, but I don't think anyone will question it much since he makes for fun comedic relief. Like most DC films these days, there are moments it's unclear where the Justice League, Justice Society, and other heroes are when the world's supposedly at risk to crumble. It isn't a superpower that makes us powerful. One hilarious scene which had my critic screening bursting at the seams involved Mirren reading a letter aloud. For those who have voiced concerns, the teaser isn't the only time you see this character in the movie. If you liked the first film, you'll have a good time here. Trailers made it appear Hespera (Mirren) and Kalypso (Liu) were simply out to destroy Billy's family for having powers they didn't earn. Infused with the childlike joy that made the first so enjoyable, "Shazam: Fury of the Gods" explores the complexities of what it means to be a hero and how everyone can be worthy if given the chance. It's a miracle "Fury of the Gods" is as good a film as it is. In no way is "Fury of the Gods" a poor sequel, so it's beyond frustrating that opening weekend projections for the film The advance reveal undercuts the sequel's emotional climactic scene. I had little to no expectations for "Shazam: Fury of the Gods."

Shazam 2 Early Reviews: A Hero Worthy Of James Gunn's New DC ... (Screen Rant)

Early reviews for Shazam! Fury of the Gods, starring Zachary Levi as the titular hero, surface ahead of the DC movie's theatrical release.

Fury of the Gods is a delightful ride and a worthy follow-up to the first film. Fury of the Gods is a success, the franchise might continue. What remains to be seen is what the future of Shazam! The opening of the film finds Hespera and Kalypso wreaking havoc in a museum as they pull off a heist. There's merit to the childish sense of fun at the heart of the film, a literalization of the imagination inherent to the premise of a kid shouting a magic word to become a superhero. Fury of the Gods is the kind of big, broad blockbuster that movie theaters can always afford to have more of. In fact, the mismatched team-up of Grazer and Hounsou is where Fury of the Gods shines brightest, a nice reminder that this film can actually be funny. Fury of the Gods is a fun movie willing to embrace weird monsters, giant dragons, and lightning punches. Even in the face of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s impending DCU reboot, Fury of the Gods tells its own story on its own terms, and the missteps it makes along the way at least feel part and parcel with the efforts of a team trying to forge their own path – both in front of and behind the camera. John Wick: Chapter 4 will be available in theaters and IMAX on March 24, 2023 (or March 23rd in Australia/NZ).](/videos/john-wick-chapter-4-official-final-trailer) [The Little Mermaid - Official Trailer“The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. As for Levi’s embodiment of Shazam, the word that rings loudest here is “consistent.” The boyishness of Billy Batson still comes through clear in Levi’s performance, but his occasional melancholy self-doubt isn’t much of a substitute for the comedic goldmine of Billy learning how to be both an adult and a superhero last time. “The Little Mermaid” is directed by Oscar® nominee Rob Marshall (“Chicago,” “Mary Poppins Returns”)with a screenplay by two-time Oscar nominee David Magee (“Life of Pi,” “Finding Neverland”). There’s not much to dislike about Grazer’s performance in a vacuum, but it’s what Fury of the Goes is missing as a result of its focus on him that leaves Freddy’s exuberance a double-edged sword. That’s not to say there aren’t references to the larger DC world to be found, just that they’re obviously not the point of this movie existing in the first place. It’s Grazer’s horrified reaction to an especially callous act of violence inflicted on a friend that grounds the Daughters’ malice in something recognizable after a first act which mostly sees them operating in the background. Moments where the kids come up with goofy solves for Serious Problems are gratifying, but Fury of the Gods’ action starts to feel a little tiresome going into the third act, where samey mythological creatures are dropped in to essentially distract the heroes who get less screen time while Shazam gets to do the monologuing with the villains. But with Hespera representing the Daughters in most conversations, Kalypso feels woefully underwritten and leaves Liu’s god with nothing but fury to work with. They’re led by Hespera, and Helen Mirren’s near-total command of her character’s function as not just the lead villain, but as a steely confident straight woman to the goofy Shazamily’s antics is delightful. However, it was Billy Batson’s soulful search for his biological family – and realization that the family he’d longed for was in front of him all along – which helped it achieve more staying power than a lot of other movies in this genre. This time we see the Shazamily putting their newfound abilities to the test against a trio of deadly deities set on overrunning Earth, and though the Greek myth iconography the villains bring to the table gives all involved a significantly increased Pandora’s toy box to play with, the movie stumbles on some storytelling basics that leave the sequel feeling less powerful than the first.

Shazam! 2 Reviews Tease a Humorous, But Overstuffed DC Sequel (Superherohype.com)

The first reviews for Shazam! Fury of the Gods are making their way online, and reactions seem to be mixed so far.

A few other DCEU movies still need to hit theaters before WB’s reset kicks off in 2025, but in Schager’s view, Fury of the Gods doesn’t give fans much of a reason to get excited for what’s next—“Messy and mirthless, it resounds as the death knell for this interconnected cinematic enterprise’s current iteration.” [Nerdist](https://nerdist.com/article/shazam-fury-of-the-gods-review-dc-david-f-sandberg-zachary-levi/) was happy to see that Fury of the Gods retained Shazam!’s familiar charms. He also praised the “energetic humor” of the larger Shazamily and the introduction of the Daughters of Atlas (though he did call Lucy Liu’s Kalypso the “weakest link” of the bunch). The ensuing blend of heart and humor even “bodes well for [the franchise’s] future in the uncertain DC Universe,” assuming it has a place there at all.
