K-Pop Twice Member Accidentally Wears Swastika Shirt After ... (The Escapist)

Chaeyoung of the K-pop group Twice apologizes for wearing a Sid Vicious swastika shirt after accidentally wearing a QAnon top at a concert.

Both episodes demonstrate the dangers of not double-checking a wardrobe for international cultural sensitivity, especially since Twice has been in the midst of promoting its new album, Ready to Be, internationally, including on [The Kelly Clarkson Show](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YS3Cny3l08E). More specifically, Chaeyoung wore a shirt of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious, who in his shirt is wearing a swastika. In addition to apologizing three separate times, she said she did not “correctly recognize the meaning of the tilted swastika” and will “pay absolute attention in the future to prevent any situation similar from happening again.” It does indeed feel like an innocent mistake, albeit one that highlights a lack of knowledge about serious topics among certain demographics in South Korea.

Apologizing on Instagram, TWICE member Chaeyoung let fans know that she “didn't recognize the meaning of the tilted swastika”

The king of cozy-time baking shows, [Paul Hollywood dressed in full-Nazi regalia for a Halloween party](https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/sep/10/great-british-bake-off-presenter-paul-hollywood-pictured-wearing-fancy-dress-nazi-uniform). The differences in cultural understanding of the symbol have created problems in the past. For many, the swastika symbolizes their religion; for many others, it symbolizes destroying one. Last year, after proclaiming that he was going “death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE,” the antisemitic rapper formerly known as Kanye West posted a swastika and got booted off Twitter. Regarding Chaeyoung’s instagram post, we sincerely apologyize for not correctly recognizing the meaning of the tilted swastika in the shirt. After all, the war against the Nazis, famously referred to as World War 2, is a well-known event worldwide. “Anti-semetism [sic] in kpop is way too overlooked,” the tweet reads. Even considering all the understanding and misunderstanding of the swastika, it remains a suspicious fashion choice. The post has a point. The other photo featured Chaeyong wearing a QAnon crop top bearing the words “We Go All.” In the spirit of those strained benefits of the doubt, most in the English-speaking world—including members of the conspiracy cult— don’t quite understand what Q is, either, but that’s by design. In this regard, we will pay abolsute attention in the future to prevent this situation from reoccuring from our side as well. I sincerely apologize regarding the Instagram post.
