The Luka-Kyrie Disaster May Force the Dallas Mavericks to Tank (The Ringer)

Dallas has completely fallen apart after going all in for Irving at the deadline. Just how bad have things gotten? It might be time for the Mavs to cut ...

With limited ways to bolster the roster, it’s crucial that this year’s pick turns into a real asset. For the Mavs to get more stops, Doncic must get in shape, stay healthy, and, for the love of all things basketball, start caring about defense. The truth is, a long break could benefit both the Mavs and Doncic. Since the deadline, the Mavs rank in the bottom five in defensive rating. Irving has missed some games due to injury, but he’s excelled as a scorer, shared the ball, and by all accounts been a model teammate since arriving in Dallas. With their season already toast, the Blazers are So, in a nutshell: The Mavs will likely have limited future first-round picks to operate with this summer (2023 or 2025, plus 2027), plus 2026 and 2028 pick swaps. Missing the playoffs and keeping their 2023 first, no matter where it lands, is probably the best path forward for the Mavericks. But hey, the strategy also netted Dallas the fifth pick in the 2018 draft, which was used to trade up and snag the franchise-altering Luka Doncic. At last month’s trade deadline, the Nets reportedly said no thanks to four first-round picks for Mikal Bridges, and the Raptors refused three for OG Anunoby. If they send their pick to the Knicks this year, then they’ll subsequently be able to trade their 2025 first starting this summer instead. The Mavericks are now just 7-13 since the Irving trade, including their current four-game skid, which has included back-to-back losses to the lowly Hornets.

Mavs star Kyrie Irving expressed his displeasure over the ongoing blame game in Dallas after Luka Doncic shared his frustration.

Kyrie Irving certainly makes a great point here. The team has now lost four straight and has gone 3-7 in their last 10 games. This is a 24/7 job.

It's not working with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving (The Washington Post)

Dallas has dropped to 11th place in the Western Conference since trading for Kyrie Irving.

Without him, the Mavericks would be reduced to Luka and the Doncic-aires — a precarious position for the franchise’s relationships with its star, who is desperate to consistently win, and its fans, who rightfully want a cohesive team capable of placating the presumed heir to Dirk Nowitzki. Yet his departure would be a massive blow to the Mavericks’ credibility following their failed experiment with Kristaps Porzingis and Brunson’s quick exit. The four-time all-star remains a central part of Dallas’s problem on the defensive end, too, and it’s not enough to simply set up teammates with laserlike passes. Doncic’s competitive fire will always burn, and he isn’t likely to go down quietly over the next two weeks. If Doncic’s anger and despair do harden, it’s never been easier for him to force his way to a new destination. Doncic’s quick temper, angry gestures and regular scowls run contrary to the goal of building a healthy and inclusive team culture. His stream of technical fouls has been a source of bad vibes all season, and the fact that he’s on the brink of a suspension counts as a major failure of leadership. Unfortunately, the Mavericks’ inability to seamlessly integrate Irving has had the opposite effect: the pressure has never been higher on everyone involved. [Kyrie Irving first suited up for the Mavericks](https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/02/05/kyrie-irving-trade-dallas-mavericks/?itid=lk_inline_manual_5), Dallas has gone 7-13 and plunged from the Western Conference’s No. But if one is off, Dallas’s margin for error evaporates because the duo’s teammates are reduced to ornamental offensive roles and lack defensive chops. The pair has mostly functioned as dual soloists, delighting with their individual skills but struggling to construct a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. To pin all of this on Irving would be a mistake.

Kyrie Irving Should Not Be Blamed for the Dallas Mavericks Issues (The Wright Way Network)

When Irving is on the court, Dallas’ net rating is +4.8 and when he and Doncic are on the court together it is a +4.6. Media personalities and basketball experts have all said the same thing, don’t blame Irving for the Mavericks problems. Kyrie Irving is not at fault for the Dallas Mavericks struggles. So it’s not as if Irving is at fault because when the two play together they can co-exist. Instead, the Mavericks front office is at fault for this situation. The Dallas Mavericks are in a bit of a free fall.
