Fooling the Filipino people — not only on April Fools' Day (The Manila Times)

The pranks played on April Fools' Day can range from harmless jokes to more elaborately planned hoaxes. The origins of this tradition are unclear, but it is ...

Alas, only in the Philippines. As usual, BSP defended itself and claimed that the delay in card production was due to a lack of PSA personnel to operate machines and/or conduct inspections, and a limited supply of machine spare parts and consumables. The agreement between BSP and AllCard was approved and signed by Diokno on the same date that the NTP was issued. The Filipinos are being fooled once more. The pump prices fluctuate on an almost weekly basis — a price cut of about a peso this week followed by a P2 increase the next week. The government and lawmakers blame greedy traders for hoarding food to create artificial shortages that allow them to jack up prices." Who are the fools? This country has experienced shortages of everything from salt to sugar over the past few months. More so, the quality of the cards was inferior and substandard. According to the History Channel, "historians speculate that April Fools' Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar, as called for by the Council of Trent in 1563. The project was eventually awarded to AllCard Inc. as part of a measure to preserve limited stored water, given the increased likelihood of an El Niño phenomenon happening by the latter half of 2023.

Do you know the origin of April Fool's Day? (Futurity: Research News)

Folklorist Angus Kress Gillespie shares the origins of April Fools' Day and some advice for choosing a prank.

It was on April Fools’ Day back in 1980 that the BBC announced a big change. A word of caution about using social media to tell your April Fools’ joke. The most effective April Fool’s jokes have come from some kind of authoritative source, such as a respected news channel or a local government. It was just right—very strange but kind of believable. Playing a joke on someone, you want to get to them early in the morning before they realize what day it is. The story goes back to the 1500s in France when the Julian calendar (established by Julius Caesar) was replaced with the Gregorian calendar (introduced by Pope Gregory XIII and still used in most parts of the world).

The weather is becoming more conducive for comfortable stargazing across North America with temperatures gradually rising as spring progresses.

The majority of the continent will experience a partial solar eclipse. This will be a good year for the Lyrids as the shower peaks two nights after a new moon, meaning moonlight will not wash out any of the dimmer shooting stars. [15 to 20 meteors per hour](https://www.amsmeteors.org/meteor-showers/meteor-shower-calendar/) on the night of April 22, into the early morning of April 23, according to the American Meteor Society. Mars and Venus will align with Mercury during the second week of April, creating a picture-perfect celestial sight. Your April 2023 Horoscope (Shondaland.com)

It's Aries season. Unlock ways to create stable foundations this month.

Luckily, these vibes will continue to unfold throughout the next 12 months, giving you plenty of time and opportunities to make good on your goals. You’ll sense a shift when the Sun migrates into Taurus on April 20, pushing you to evolve on a soulful level. If you’re invested in making your mark in the digital realms, consider using this energy to rebrand your image, updating photos and information you post online. As Aries season activates the sector of your chart that governs luck and spirituality, the stars will work overtime to upgrade your life. The stabilizing nature of this cosmic climate will cause you to feel calmer and more in control of your situation, though you’ll want to watch out for stubborn behaviors that could cause you to get in your own way. Plan on holding space for yourself and your favorite people during the Libra Full Moon on April 5, putting you in a soft and relationship-oriented mood. Touch base with your work-life balance during the Libra Full Moon on April 5, which will activate the sector of your chart that governs the home and your nurturing demeanor. Unfortunately, the sparkling vibes brought on by the dawn of your season could be overshadowed as Mercury enters its retrograde motion April 21, threatening to trigger miscommunications, clumsiness, and unreliable technology. Financial matters will come into focus as the stars request that you check your spending habits in order to save and create more stable foundations for you and your family. Don’t worry, though — you can return to your full-steam-ahead attitude during the Aries solar eclipse on April 19, which is poised to ignite your passions and ability to reach goals. A cosmic union between the Sun and Chiron will bring forth opportunities to heal, making it important that you find balance between your needs and those of the people you care for most. The Libra Full Moon graces our skies April 5, marking one of the most romantic days of 2023 and the perfect excuse to celebrate the special people in your life.

Final note: This is kind of a BS day to get a Wordle in one. And the sad truth of it is, it was kind of a hole in two. No cleverness in the machine. Anyone lucky or clever enough to try March was rewarded with the hole in one. Wordle Bot took three, by the way. I plugged it in. Imagine my surprise when it turned over all green! Only one month remained, and it’s the one we just finished. The most widely accepted explanation is that it began in France in the 16th century. However, some people were slow to get the news or failed to recognize that the start of the new year had moved, and continued to celebrate it on April 1st. In 1582, France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. This is when bad joke headlines flood the internet and “fake news” takes on a whole new meaning—perhaps a less sinister one, but still annoying.

Cry Heard on April Fools' Day (The New York Times)

This Saturday collaboration between Wyna Liu and Joel Fagliano looks hard, but it really just looks hard.

A MAILBOX is a stumpy metal receptacle that’s meant to receive correspondence on paper, or “letters,” usually from people of a certain age. The MythBuster is ADAM SAVAGE, and the daughter is EVIE (I chose “Edie” here, at first). This “Word that means the same thing even with letters added” is a pun clue for a MAILBOX. I didn’t know who this “One member of TV’s MythBusters” was, nor did I remember the name of the “Wilcox daughter in ‘Howards End’” — even though I had read the book and watched the [Merchant-Ivory movie](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104454/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0) when it came out. What is a MAILBOX? Fagliano constructed a grid full of peppy entries, and then a neutral party reconciled the two halves. Both are utterances that would answer this clue, “Cry heard on April Fools’ Day,” if they had fit. Sizdah Bedar, which is [said](https://surfiran.com/sizdah-bedar-festival-iran/) to have been [ celebrated as far back as the 5th century BC](https://www.learnpersianonline.com/blog/persian-traditions-sizdah-bedar-13th-day-nowrouz/), is translated as “getting rid of 13,” so it has an appropriately superstitious air. In Brazil, however, April 1 is still the prank day of choice, and they cut straight to the chase by calling it “ [Dia das Mentiras](https://www.brownandhudson.com/news/article/april-fools-day),” or “Day of Lies.” [Day of the Innocents](https://panoramas.secure.pitt.edu/%E2%80%9C%C2%A1inocente-inocente%E2%80%9D-day-innocents-latin-america%E2%80%99s-april-fools%E2%80%99-day),” a late December Catholic feast with extremely un-silly origins that somehow became a day of jokes and pranks. If you don’t get gowked, there’s always an opportunity for humiliation the next day, which is “Tailie Day.” Tailie Day is for largely harmless derrière-related pranks, like pinning a tail on someone or sticking a sign on their back. However, research did turn up a [fantastic parting phrase](https://www.tbnpolska.tv/newsy/prima-aprilis-uwazaj-bo-sie-pomylisz) for prankers: Prima Aprilis, uważaj, bo się pomylisz! The “Els Enfarinats” tradition is reportedly more than 200 years old and involves a mock military-style “takeover” of the town, where the new rulers get to make up strange laws that others have to abide by. [one apocryphal origin theory](http://hoaxes.org/af_database/permalink/origin_of_april_fools_day) suggests that when France switched from the Julian calendar to the current Gregorian calendar in the 1500s, people thought it would be funny to jokingly celebrate the old “New Year’s” and make fun of people who forgot the change. Iran could boast the oldest April Fools’ traditions with its observance of Sizdah Bedar, which also has a prank-playing element. [stick paper fish on other people’s backs](https://frenchmoments.eu/april-fools-day-traditions-in-france-le-1er-avril/), kind of like an elevated “kick me” sign. Donald Clarke: Once enthusiastically embraced by newspapers, the tradition has ebbed in recent years.

That record of pretentious journalism – a cousin of Private Eye’s Pseuds Corner – did not seem to detect the self-deprecation in “The proto-earthly intensity of the sub-Monostrovian narrative remains visibly, uncomfortably stratified”. The film pages in this newspaper were on board for a good portion of the current century. In 1999 the Guardian returned to San Serriffe to discover a “vibrant nation transformed by a visionary leader”. The title is an anagram of “April Fools”. Nobody needs to pull journalists away from the British Leyland dispute to compose a many-paged supplement on an imaginary island nation. General MJ Pica, the country’s dictator, is “named after a unit of measurement in type”. It says something about British dietary habits in the Macmillan era that millions believed pasta might grow on trees and that it might be susceptible to the “spaghetti weevil”. For decades, newspapers and broadcasters have joined in what I am required to call “the fun” (or, still worse, “the cra*c”). On April 1st, 2005, Michael Dwyer, my predecessor as film correspondent, published a “six-star” review of a non-existent film called Sail-Proof Lady. But the modern mode really seems to have kicked in with the BBC’s notorious “spaghetti tree hoax” in 1957. You can “win two weeks in San Serriffe as the guest of James Hunt” (the cavalier racing driver had just beaten Nikki Lauda to the world championship). This column has learned the internet is suffering from dry rot and will cease to function by the end of the current decade.

April Fools' Day: What are its origins and how do Europeans ... (Euronews)

April Fools' Day: Why do we collectively try to mess with others on 1 April, and how do countries celebrate this festival of foolishness?

Only the Netherlands had to be sacrificed on the alter of prank this year. Just to be clear – the rest of this article is based on facts. The Portuguese don’t celebrate April Fools’ Day on 1 April and prefer the Sunday and Monday prior to Lent. The prank first appeared in a British newspaper on 2 April 1698, where an article on the front page read: "Yesterday being the first of April, several persons were sent to the Tower Ditch to see the Lions washed." In 2008, they fooled their audience again with their viral Miracles of Evolution trailer, which appeared to show some special penguins that had regained the ability to fly. In England, it had become a popular prank to send gullible victims to the Tower of London to see the washing of the lions – a ceremony that didn’t exist. Much later on, the BBC infamously reported on 1 April 1957 in a spoof segment that Swiss farmers were experiencing a record spaghetti crop and showed footage of people harvesting noodles from trees. It is called Gowkie Day, for the gowk - or cuckoo - a symbol of the fool. When the person receives the letter, they open it, read it and tell the messenger that they will have to take the letter to another person. April Fools’ Day is only celebrated for half a day in England. Others have pointed out that the Holi festival in India, which also takes place in March, could be the source of the day. Many trace the custom back to medieval France where 25 March used to be New Year's Day until the Julian calendar was reformed in 1564 and changed to the Gregorian calendar.

April 1 foolhardy tradition dates back centuries (Marietta Times)

I have always found April Fools' Day to one of the oddest of the days we observe. Days observed for no other reason than the calendar has turned one more ...

There has been many actually stories that have at first been questioned simply because of the date that they occurred. The writers likely thought they were being funny and maybe they were, but I have never thought of newspapers as some place that comedy belonged. The tradition of playing pranks on the first of April dates back hundreds of years in several European countries. You could argue that the date should give people clue to the joke, but items are not always read or viewed when you expect them to be. In Scotland: This is one of my favorite pranks — it involves sending a person with an important letter to someone else. Days observed for no other reason than the calendar has turned one more date have always felt a bit empty to me, and I’m not joking.

The three most famous pranks on April Fools' Day (Fox News)

For decades, the first of April has been a day in which the public is tricked into believing crazy hoaxes — and is surprised by lighthearted pranks.

Another infamous gag on April Fools' Day occurred in the U.K. Therefore, hundreds of people called the network asking how to grow their own spaghetti trees before the BBC clarified it was a prank. The network ran a report on April Fools' Day that featured a Swiss family harvesting a record number of spaghetti crops from a purported "spaghetti tree." Getting back to Mercury, I'm guessing that the evening of April 18 will probably be the last chance for most people to get a glimpse of it. On the evenings of April 10 and April 11, Venus will make its closest pass relative to the Seven Sisters, coming within 2.5 degrees of this beautiful cluster. [binoculars](https://www.space.com/26021-best-binoculars.html), scan near the west-northwest horizon to locate Mercury. On the evening of April 9, Venus and Mercury will appear closest together, 19.5 degrees apart. In fact, this will be Mercury's very best showing of the year for those who are located north of the equator — better than even this year's best pre-sunrise apparition (which will occur in late September). But this unfavorable circumstance will rapidly improve in the coming days, for although it will slowly fade, this will be more than compensated by the fact that Mercury will be pulling farther away from the sun and correspondingly lifting higher up into the sky. In fact, between April 4 and April 13, Mercury will be within 20.5 degrees of Venus. Don't forget a [moon filter](https://www.space.com/31048-how-to-observe-the-moon-telescope-binoculars.html)! Mercury ventures away from our star only about half as far into our evening sky, dodging out into view in the evening twilight low in the western sky.

April Fools' Day: 5 (in)famous pranks that have made April 1 headlines (ABS-CBN News)

While the press once pulled spectacular pranks on April 1, they now have to tread carefully with fake news. A look at some funny journalistic fiction over ...

Among the complaints sent to the paper was one from the zoo's director. [Pluto](https://www.dw.com/en/plutos-marvelous-methane-ice-dunes-surprise-scientists/a-44029378) Has Been Officially Reclassified As A Planet!" The seven-page report came complete with a map of the archipelago that featured places, ports and spots whose names were all word plays of fonts and typefaces. As spaghetti was a relatively unknown product in the UK back then, many viewers contacted the BBC for advice on growing their own spaghetti trees. A faster pace would not be conducive for squirrels in their height of mating season. The paper reported that the pandas, a gift from the Chinese government, were brown forest bears dyed to resemble pandas. The pranks were more impactful in the decades predating the internet and Google, where news was only available either in print or via radio and television. To date, no commercial airlines offer such flights. In 2010, Denmark's State National Historic Museum released a handout featuring a skeletal version of the city's famous tourist attraction "The Little Mermaid." But perhaps the best pranks have been pulled by the press — traditionally seen as the purveyors of truth — where for a day, journalists are allowed to release their inner fiction writers. London's Madame Tussauds Wax Museum featured in 2017 a special installation of "The Invisible Man." Despite being an April Fool's joke, this "news" was carried by other websites without any fact-checking.

With Venus well aspected in Taurus on the 7th, close relationships can improve, and the 8th is an opportune time to pursue new plans. April 1—15: The 4th and 5th are the days to make sound, well-thought-out decisions. The full Moon of the 6th tugs you inward in an important way, and Venus, well aspected in your relationship angle, promotes closeness on the 7th. April 1—15: Try not to get too flustered by others’ rigid behavior near the 2nd and 3rd, because solutions on the 5th will resolve any issues. Still, decisions you reach near the 5th appear to be on target to get you on track. Getty Images
