Some (Spoiler-Free) First Impressions of Hell's Paradise (Game Rant)

Crunchyroll's newest shonen brings together horror-fantasy, an Edo-era Japanese period piece setting, and a white-haired anime boy who just won't die.

The first episode of the anime does more to set up the plot of the series than it does to show off all of the specific feel of this era and setting, although what is shown has the promise of a unique take on historical fantasy-horror not often seen in common shonen. From an advanced screening ahead of its premiere on April 1st, [Crunchyroll’s](https://gamerant.com/best-anime-crunchyroll/) newest shonen tentpole, Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku, is a uniquely fresh examination of death, immortality, and attachment within the context of a pronounced Japanese period piece setting. [white-haired boys](https://gamerant.com/best-male-anime-characters-with-white-hair/) are always the most likely to die.

Hell's Paradise episode one puts characters first and earns it's 'dark ... (digitalspy.com)

The first episode of the Hell's Paradise anime introduces some key characters, like Gabimaru and Segiri, and concepts.

The character-building and work that gets done on behalf of Gabimaru just fifteen minutes into Hell's Paradise's first episode is extremely impressive. Halfway through the episode, it's revealed that the woman interviewing Gabimaru is actually a 'sword tester' and executioner from the renowned Yamada clan named Sagiri. We're also told, by Gabimaru, that he was married to the village chief's daughter but, after deciding they were no longer a good fit, tried to leave and was left for dead. Episode one is filled with twists, action and a macabre sense of humour – but also suggests a series that's keen to emphasise its characters above all else. For many anime viewers, they're reminiscent of the grittier productions of the late 1980s and 1990s. The three shows are grouped together because of their similar tone and themes, especially compared with their peppier peers.

Hell's Paradise anime is finally here! MAPPA's latest project promises a dark and thrilling combination of twists, action, and character development.

While the opening episode might appear sluggish to some viewers, its focus on the main character's backstory and the bond between Gabimaru and Sagiri embodies the type of action series that prioritizes character development, which we anticipate it to be. The character-building and storytelling work done on behalf of Gabimaru in the first fifteen minutes of the episode was much needed. The interactions between him and Sagiri reveal much about his character, and we see a relatable side to him that makes us root for him. The show's attention to detail and careful crafting are evident in every frame, which transports viewers to the historical setting of rural Japan during the Edo period. This attention to detail and unique visual style adds to the immersive and captivating experience of watching Hell's Paradise. In a cruel twist of fate, Gabimaru now finds himself on the brink of execution for simply pursuing a peaceful existence with his beloved. Unfortunately, the only explorers that returned were deformed and destroyed by beautiful plants and flowers. The two engage in witty banter, and we learn a great deal about Gabimaru's past. From the first episode, it's clear that Hell's Paradise is not your typical shōnen anime. As one of the leading studios in the anime industry, MAPPA has raised the bar with their recent adaptations of [Jujutsu Kaisen](https://www.hindustantimes.com/entertainment/anime/top-7-strongest-characters-in-jujutsu-kaisen-anime-who-are-they-101679900407170.html) and [Chainsaw Man](https://www.hindustantimes.com/entertainment/anime/my-hero-academia-and-chainsaw-man-manga-reigns-supreme-on-nyt-bestseller-list-in-march-2023-101678112698193.html), and it's no surprise that they've added Hell's Paradise to their impressive portfolio. The first episode has undoubtedly piqued the interest of fans, and as the story unfolds, we can expect more twists and turns in Gabimaru's quest for freedom and a reunion with his wife. The first episode of Jigokuraku masterfully sets the stage for an epic adventure as Gabimaru embarks on a perilous quest in search of the elusive elixir. Sagiri then revealed that Gabimaru lied about his wife because she had learned previously that Gabimaru loved his wife and tried to get away from the village to live a simple life with her as a normal person would. The proposition would get Gabimaru a full pardon for his crime and get him his freedom, but on one condition. As Sagiri marched forward to perform the execution by the order of the magistrate, Gabimaru defended. Moreover, Sagiri questions whether he truly wants to die, to which Gabimaru responds that he has nothing to live for, blaming the executioners' lack of skill for his continued survival. As no method of execution worked for Gabimaru, it was shown in the first episode of Jigokuraku that the magistrate resorted to a final trump card to take Gabimaru down. As Gabimaru didn’t know about Sagiri, he explained to her the execution method he had gone through and how they failed to kill him. As the episode unfolded, Gabimaru is interrogated in his cell by a mysterious woman, who learned about his background. It has beautiful visuals and a compelling story that has quickly caught the attention of anime fans all over the world.

'Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku' Is Bloody Good - The Montclarion (The Montclarion)

A cast of morally questionable convicts and honor-bound executioners more loveable than baby animals, mystic fight scenes bordering on body horror, ...

This hyper-violence is anything but tasteless though, as the grit and feel of real mortality add to the pressure of every struggle. Each pair of convict and executioner are given their own focus and time to shine in the story, giving depth and emotional attachment to them. With the anime adaptation airing on April 1, there’s never been a better time to see what all the hype is about and jump into this masterwork of manga. Soon finding themselves in over their heads as they encounter the island’s monstrous guardians and eerie inhabitants, the characters must survive against each other and their new threat to have any hope of finding the elixir. Reluctantly forming some semblance of partnership, Gabimaru and Sagiri set out to overcome their supernatural environment and leave (hopefully) in one piece. Underneath the bloody exterior of Yuji Kaku’s “Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku,” is a story filled with heart and humanity, held up by a charming rogues’ gallery of characters and artwork gorgeous enough to frame.
