Philippine Divorce Bill Drama Unfolds: House Delays Sending Bill to Senate

Divorce Bill - House vs. Senate - Marriage - Philippine Senate

The Philippine divorce bill faces delays in transmission to the Senate amidst disagreements and mass actions by anti-divorce groups. Learn more about the uphill battle for divorce in the country!

The Philippine divorce bill has been a hot topic recently as the House of Representatives defers the transmittal of the approved bill to the Senate. Albay 1st District Representative Edcel Lagman, the principal author of the bill in the lower chamber, expressed his disagreement with this delay. Anti-divorce groups in Cebu City are planning mass actions against the measure, with the Archdiocese of Cebu Commission on the Laity calling out lawmakers who voted in favor of it.

Despite the House passing the bill on absolute divorce before Congress adjourned, the transmission to the Senate is still pending. Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada conducted a survey among senators, revealing a division with six senators in favor of the divorce bill. The Catholic Church remains a strong opponent of the proposed law in the Philippines, emphasizing its stance on marriage sanctity.

Bataan 1st District Rep. Geraldine Roman cited three main reasons for backing divorce, advocating for couples to have a way out of unhappy marriages. The push for divorce faces hurdles with the CBCP maintaining a firm objection and the Senate divided on the bill. Iloilo Rep. Janette L. Garin proposed making annulments free as a compromise to the divorce bill, highlighting the ongoing debate on marriage dissolution in the country.
